Intro • Since 2011, the safety camera system has been brought into traffic and law enforcement here in Saudi Arabia under the name “Saher” which loosely translates to “the overseer” in Arabic. The system acts upon numerous cameras littered across the city in a number of ways. Some are fixed on traffic lights and intersections, others are mobile; attached to undercover vehicles that can be easily stowed and hidden in discreet locations across the breadth of highways here in Saudi Arabia.
Methodology • Questionnaires targeted at male PMU students aged 18 – 26 • Straight forward questions, factual data attributing to SAHER violations and general knowledge of the system.
Main Targeted Questions • Should there be a second SAHER camera on Khaldiyya Rd. ? (YN) • Should there be more SAHER traffic cameras on main highways? (YN) • Have you been violated in the past 6 months? (YN) • Has your driving stylespeed changed after the implementation of SAHER? (YN)
Data
Have you been violated in the past 3 years ?
Conclusion • In conclusion, the topic we chose to base our study on may be one of the most infamous scandals that have been played on the Saudi public since the banning of cable TV back in the 70’s, yet the controversy that surrounds such an issue is surprisingly minimal. Citizens have acknowledged that such a system is practically the only way to curb and diminish the cold reality of reckless driving here in Saudi Arabia.
