Cold Checkout week 4 / Beam commissioning (2021 week 9) Monday 01/03 Tuesday 02/03 Wednesday 03/03 Access SMH 42 15 min AM connection Access BI for 15 min PM grounding signal cables wirescanners Thursday 04/03 Friday 05/03 Media Event BEAM COMMISSIONING !! PSR in BEAM TT 2 in BEAM SWY in BEAM TT 2 in BEAM SMH 42 first pulses LHCINDIV to D 3 PS Ready for Beam Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS PS Ring Access small water leaks SMH 42 and C 46, MTV 42, several front end reboots
First beam! • Wednesday : SMH 42 reconnection in the morning, first pulses around 18 h. • PS was ready for beam Wednesday evening • Big thanks to : • all specialists involved in the PS Hardware commissioning and cold checkout periods for their commitment and availability • Mark and Oliver for the tremendous work organizing this • PSB / LN 4 team for the beam preparation • Around 19 h : 2 BTP quad destination issue fixed by Raul Murillo – Thanks! • First try, we got the beam on the screen just before the SMH 42 Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS
First beam - continued • Around 23 h : The beam was already making several turn • After injection steering, first acceleration to intermediate plateau straight away • Around 1 am : Crossing transition • Thursday : to D 3 dump (end of TT 2) Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS
Thursday - Friday • SMH 42 tripped at 12: 08 because of vacuum rise due to sublimation - switching SMH 42 OFF daily at noon during 15 minutes • BTP kick response: BTP. DHZ 10 inverted, BTP. DVT 10 does not kick the beam… • first tune measurements, PS orbit test, YASP, BSM, Tomoscope, BGI (First profiles available on CCC Vistar) • LHCINDIV reached D 3 dump with generated settings from model! • kick responses on correctors: DVTs (correct), DHZs (calibration curve inverted in LSA), DHZOC (calibration curves inverted in LSA for DHZ 60), Test of TT 2 Sem. Fils (work fine) • kick response in TT 2 (fine in V, inverted for BHZ 117, 147, 167 – different MAD-X convention for RBEND and HKICKER) • First beam tests with internal dump 48. Commissioning continued on Monday. • Friday afternoon, several PS accesses to repair small water leaks on SMH 42 and C 46, for MTV septum 42, and several front-end reboots. • started working on MTE beam Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS
Saturday - Monday • started working on TOF beam • successfully tested the generation of low energy working point and also high level knobs Qx_LEQ and Qy_LEQ. • Some difficulties to cross the transition on MTE and TOF beams from Saturday followed by RF expert on Monday – OK now • On Saturday a low intensity TOF beam was sent to D 3 dump with generated settings (extraction + TT 2) • MTE beam with 4 bunches from the PSB, later extracted to dump D 3 Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS
Some work in progress • Synchronization PSB-PS • initially not stable – timing configuration fixed • some pulses PSB side (BEX. W 10 SYNCPS) not triggered/jumping (PIX. SSYNC is fine in PS) – CO investigating • POPS regulation • 10 G overshoot at arrival on intermediate plateau, also other plateaus – had a first look with Fulvio Boattini yesterday • SEMFIL TT 2 not completely out – to be checked in access • Internal dump • stayed in beam after high-intensity interlock test – tests continue this afternoon • PSB extraction BIC interlock working • Wire Scanners • First scans done using FESA classes – setup ongoing • TT 2 BLMs • noise on the first monitors, due to cable routing – beam commissioning difficult • experts investigating firmware fix to reduce impact – long-term fix cabling/grounding • SMH 42 • timing jumps every few pulses – EPC contacted • SMH 16 • current acquisition not working – Pow. M 1553 issue to be taken up by EPC Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS
Status / Plans • Very quick progress of the commissioning – again many thanks to everyone involved • LHCINDIV, low-intensity TOF, low-intensity MTE beams already sent to dump D 3 • optimization work ongoing… • Orbit measurement at 14 Ge. V, calculate MU corrections • First test of YASP FT measurement. Radial position still a bit offset towards the outside and still some BPM outliers • BPM system sees random gain changes on some BPMs – experts investigating • then access for alignment of MU (+ list of other fixes) • continue setup and fixing ‘work in progress’ Marc Delrieux and Oliver Hans / Denis Cotte and Frank Tecker / BE-OP-PS
