PRSENTATION ON BIOMETRICS FOR RECOGNITION Presented by RAVI PANT IT 6 TH
Presentation Outlines §Traditional methods of security §Need for biometrics §Biometrics recognition techniques §How biometrics work §Applications
WHAT IS BIOMETRICS ? • BIO- Physical or Behavioral • METRICS- To measure characteristics ØBiometrics refers to the automatic identification of a person based on his or her physiological or behavioral characteristics.
Need Of Biometrics • ATMs • Cellular phones • Smart cards • Desktop PCs • Computer networks ØPINs and passwords may be forgotten ØToken-based identification methods such as passports and driver’s licenses may be stolen, or lost.
Physical biometrics Ø Fingerprint Ø Facial recognition/face location Ø Hand geometry Ø Iris scan Ø Retinal scan
Behavioral biometrics ØSpeaker/voice recognition Analyzing vocal behavior ØSignature/handwriting Analyzing signature dynamics Ø Keystroke/patterning Measuring the time spacing of typed words
Fingerprint recognition A live acquisition of a person’s fingerprint. • Dots (very small ridges) • Ridges are lines on the finger • Proper positioning of dots identify person.
Block diagram of biometrics
ØBiometric sensor: - acquire images. ØPreprocessing: - reference points extraction, contour spacing, binarization. ØFeature extraction: - removal of noise, convert data into numeric feature template. ØMatcher: - Compare extraced template with previously enrolled templates. - Determine degree of similarity & output matching score. ØDecision: - matching score compare with threshold.
Hand Geometry Hand or finger geometry is an automated measurement of many dimensions of the hand fingers.
Iris recognition Iris scanning measures the iris pattern in the colored part of the eye.
Signature Verification ØAn automated method of measuring an individual’s signature. ØThis technology examines speed, direction, and pressure of writing. Speaker / Voice Recognition ØVoice or speaker recognition uses vocal characteristics to identify individuals using a passphrase. ØA telephone or microphone can serve as a Sensor.
Keystroke Dynamics ØKeystroke dynamics is an automated method of examining an individual’s keystrokes on a keyboard. ØThis technology examines such dynamics as speed and pressure, the total time taken to type particular words, and the time elapsed between hitting certain keys.
APPLICATIONS Ø Prevent unauthorized access to ATMs, Cellular phones, Smart cards, Desktop PCs, Computer network. ØCriminal identification, prison security. ØElectronic commerce, Electronic banking ØAirport security, voter cards, civilian applications.
Conclusion ØBiometric is an emerging area with many opportunities for growth. ØPossibly in the near future, you will not have to remember PINs and passwords and keys in your bags or pockets will be things of the past.
