In 1946 he is allowed in the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1970 he was appointed Chairman of the International Society for the Study of the origin of Life.

Teoría (Theory) l l l It is based on the physical and chemical conditions that existed in the primitive Earth which made it possible the development of life. In the primitive Earth there were certain temperatures as well as sun radiations. They affected the substances that existed in the primitive seas. These substances got combined in a such a way that they produced alive beings. In 194 he brings out The origin of life, a work in which he suggests that the primitive Earth’s atmosphere lacked oxigen but there were substances in it such as hydrogen, methane and amoniac. These substances reacted with the energy of solar radiation, the electric activity of atmosphere and vulcanos, giving origin to the first alive beings. l l l Se basa en las condiciones físicas y químicas que existieron en la tierra primitiva, las cuales permitieron el desarrollo de la vida. The great contribution of Cajal to the science history is the neuronal theory. Thanks to this theory Cajal got the Nobel award in 1906 which he shared with Golgi.

Her father did not allow her to study for years because in that time many thought women should not do such things. When she was twenty years old she was finally allowed to enter high school and then the Medicine School. In 1938 the Italian antijew laws forced her to leave the University and to get hidden to avoid deportation. During the war she worked as a doctor for Resistance and the allied troops. In 1947 she was invited to work as a neurologist in Washington University, Saint Louis (USA), where she discovered NGF proteine, that stimulated the growing of the nervous fibres. This discovery made her the winner of the Nobel Medicine award in 1986. She has written a lot of books, and recently, her interest in them is focussed on digital revolution and the need of an educational reform. Siguiente

Anterior Siguiente l Fighting against every difficulty during the years of the German occupation in Italy, she kept a clandestine laboratory , that she moved from a home to other. That clandestine research led her right away to the discovery, some years later, of the growing factors. Her inspiration, in the clandestine years, was the work by Viktor Hamburger on the development of the nervous system in chicken embryo. It was Hamburger who invited her to deepen in that research in the Washington University, in Saint Louis. R. Levi Montalcini focussed her research on a kind of tumor, in mouses which, when trasplanted to a chicken embryo, caused a drastic growing of the nervous fibres linked to the sensitive impulses. The scientist noticed that this nervous growing did not need a direct contact with the tumor, and she supposed that it liberated some sort of factor that, all alone, was able to stimulate the developement of certain nerves. She called it nervous growing factor (NGF).

The NGF discoverd by Levi Montalcini was only the first of a long row of growing factors, all of the essential parts in the cells language to stablish comunication among them and to organize the progressive development of the embryo and the foetus. She and her colaborator showed that NGF has the same function from reptiles on, human kind included. The growing factors discovered by this Italian -American scientist are the key to understand the main phenomena in the human development, beggining with the embryo, the foetus and the child. However, these growing factors can be damaged, and these damages are behind many congenital misformations, degenerative processes and many kinds of cancer. As the Swedish Academy acknowledged in 1986, the discovery of the growing factors “is a fasciniting instance of how an intelligent observer can extract a concept from an apparent chaos”. It’s not easy to deduce general principles from the biological systems, but it was precisely that what Rita Levi-Montalcini aported to the science of the XX century. Anterior Rita

Golgi l l Camillo Golgi (July 7, 1843 – January 21, 1926) was an Italian physician and scientist. Golgi was born in Corteno, province of Brescia, Italy. His father was a physician and district medical officer. Golgi studied medicine at University of Pavia, where he worked in the experimental pathology laboratory under Giulio Bizzozero, . He graduated in 1865. He spent much of his career studying the central nervous system. Tissue staining techniques in the latter half of the 19 th century were inadequate for studying nervous tissue. While working as chief medical officer in a psychiatric hospital, he experimented with metal impregnation of nervous tissue, using mainly silver (silver staining). Siguiente

Anterior l l He discovered a method of staining nervous tissue which would stain a limited number of cells at random, in their entirety. This enabled him to view the paths of nerve cells in the brain for the first time. He called his discovery the "black reaction" (in Italian, reazione nera), which later received his name (Golgi's method) or Golgi stain. The reason for the random staining is still not understood. The black reaction consisted in fixing silver chromate particles to the neurilemma (the neuron membrane) by reacting silver nitrate with potassium dichromate. This resulted in a stark black deposit on the soma as well as on the axon and all dendrites, providing an exceedingly clear and well contrasted picture of neuron against a yellow background. The ability to visualize separate neurons led to the eventual acceptance of the neuron doctrine. Siguiente

Golgi murió en Pavía, Italia, en Enero de 1926. l l l Anterior Golgi In addition to this discovery, Golgi discovered a tendon sensory organ that bears his name (Golgi receptor). He studied the life cycle of Plasmodium falciparum and related the timing of fevers seen in malaria with the life cycle of this organism. Using his staining technique, Golgi identified the intracellular reticular apparatus in 1898 which bears his name, the Golgi apparatus. Golgi, together with Santiago Ramón y Cajal, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906 for his studies of the structure of the nervous system. Golgi died in Pavia, Italy, in January 1926

Teoría reticular l Thanks to the staining method invented by Golgi , he was able to provide a thorough and precise description of nerve cells in various regions of the cerebro-spinal axis, clearly distinguishing the axon from the dendrites. He drew up a new classification of cells on the basis of the structure of their nervous prolongation, and he criticized Gerlach's theory of the "protoplasmic network". Golgi claimed to observe in the gray matter an extremely dense and intricate network, composed of a web of intertwined branches of axons coming from different cell layers ("diffuse nervous network"). Siguiente

l This structure, which emerges from the axons and is therefore essentially different from that hypothesized by Gerlach, appeared in his view to be the main organ of the nervous system, the organ that connected different cerebral areas both anatomically and functionally by means of the transmission of an electric nervous impulse. Golgi's reticular theory, along with the other reticular theories of the nervous system prevalent at the end of the nineteenth century, had in a certain sense overturned the 'atomistic-reductionist' principle that lay behind the cell theory.

Anterior It was firstly published as a monograph in the International Encyclopedia of the Unified Science and then as a book by the Publishing house of the University of Chicago in the year 1962. In 1969, Kuhn added an appendix as a reply to the critiques that the first edition had provoked. Siguiente

Anterior Kuhn was declaring that the genesis of the ideas of the book took place in 1947, when he was entrusted to give science lessons for students of Humanities, focussing on historical cases of study. Later on he would declare that up to that moment he had never read any ancient document on scientific topics. Aristotle's Physics was notably different from Newton's work in respect to concepts of matter and movement. He came to the conclusion that Aristotle's concepts were not " more limited " or "worse" than those of Newton, only different. Siguiente

Anterior Kuhn During the period of the normal science scientists cultivate an existing paradigm that includes these theoretical concepts that most of the scientists in this field approve. They belong to the basic nature of the objects of the study and how they will be considered, aproached and measured; methods of investigation; models who describe or explain the phenomena; the accumulated bank of information.

Kuhn l According to Kuhn, normal l science takes the task of solving scientific situations from a certain paradigm, which is shared by the members of a scientific community in every field of research: Normal science means research based firmly on one or more past scientific accomplishments, which some scientific particular community recognizes, during certain time, as a foundation for its later practice. Siguiente

Normal science, therefore, implies " a period " in which scientific activities are executed, following a paradigm, allowing in this way that the most relevant aspects are revealed, according to this paradigmatic reference. He refers to the whole prescientífic stage, that in the neopositivist philosophy is denoted as context of discovery. This one and the progressive constitution of a paradigm give origin to this stage of normal science.

Let's try to clarify his notion on this fundamental category for his epistemological statements : paradigm. Kuhn wants to support that the scientific development cannot be considered a process of accumulation of facts, inventions, theories, scientific laws, in clear opposition to the current neopositivist point of view that somehow, in this aspect, was supported also by Popper. It admits also, with an explanation of historical value, that the scientific antiquated theories, though they had been discarded, would not stop being scientific.

It’s true that in the historical process the ways of compiling and trying the information have been diverse, not to speak about the variety of situations in which a theory is discovered. Having in account the different criteria and technological possibilities of every time. Likewise, there have been diverse types of interpretation that have influenced in the understanding of scientific phenomena. All the disperse sciences disappear precisely in the moment of the constitution of a paradigm. Hence that the term paradigm for Kuhn is intimately related to that of normal science.

What Kuhn names paradigmatic initial accomplishments, fulfill, according to the author, at least two essential characteristics, by which they have been able to stay in the history, as normal science, allowing to define investigations, as for his theory and method, in a certain scientific field. The above mentioned characteristics are: They lacked precedents as to be able to attract a lasting group of supporters, removing them from the competitive aspects of the scientific activity. At the same time, they were incomplete enough to leave many problems to be solved by the re-delimited group of scientists.

Atrás l l The accomplishments that were fulfilling these characteristics were in the area of being a normal science and Kuhn named them paradigms. In this it is said that one to know "will" "promote" to the category of science once in view of the victory of a paradigm above-mentioned him, assembling the members who learn, they know and practise the bases given by the paradigm: The men whose investigation is based on shared paradigms are subject to the same rules and procedure for the scientific practice. This commitment and the apparent assent that itprovokes are previous requirements for the normal science, that is to say, for the genesis and the continuation of a particular tradition of the scientific investigation. l l En esta afirmación se descubren las bases que permiten la constitución de creencias y hábitos de científicos e intelectuales, que los identifica como comunidad científica o como escuela paradigmática, que se ha impuesto históricamente ante otras nociones del saber correspondiente Kuhn, en el capítulo que sigue, describirá con palabras breves su noción de paradigma; aunque ya en el capítulo que acá tratamos la ha ido presentando: "Un paradigma es un modelo o patrón aceptado"; aceptado por una comunidad de científicos que raramente concurren en desacuerdo con su manera específica de hacer ciencia. Atrás Kuhn In this affirmation there are discovered the bases that allow the constitution of beliefs and scientists habits and intellectual, that identifies them as scientific community or as paradigmatic school, which has been imposed historically before other notions of knew correspondent Kuhn, in the chapter that itcontinues, will describe with brief words his notion of paradigm; though already in the chapter that here we treat he her it has been presenting: " A paradigm is a model or accepted boss "; accepted by a scientists' community that strange they meet in disagreement with his specific way of doing science.

Índice III Assotiationist theory Assotiationism is a psychological theory, held mainly by some English empirists, that explains psychic phenomena by the association of ideas. Associacionist theory states that we relate certain things in our memory, in our thinking and in our mental life as a whole, because they appear linked in our original experiences. Assotiationists maintain that the complexity of our mental life can be reduced to the sensitive impressions, what is to say, to the elemental components of conscience in its link with experience.

The essential formulation of this hypothesis would be the following one: experience data make us to understand that conscience merges from certain ways of biological organization of matter. We understand the term “emergency” in the sense of “ being caused, started or produced in its proper reality trough certain ways of biological organization of matter”. The emergentism is a theory which states that conscience comes from matter. This “emergency” doesn´t mean that the conscience that comes from matter is different from it. It is the same matter organized in a different way. This continuity doesn´t mean that the conscience is a quality or new way of being in respect of matter. The emergentism appears with philosopher J. Searle who holds that mind and brain interact, but they are completely different. Mental phenomena are the result of certain brain characteristics or some processes, but they cannot be reduced to them, because they are an emergent property of the brain.

Índice III REDUCTIONIST MATTERIALIMS Reductionist matterialims states that everything that exists in reality can be explained in physical terms. Besides every phenomena are physical phenomena that can be explained by natural laws. In philosophy of mind, reductionist matterialims is a theory that supports the point of view that mental states can be reduced to physical states.

CONTRAPOSICIÓN DEL ASOCIACIONISMO Y LA GESTALT Associationism against Gestalt theories. Associationism is a psychological school that underlines the part that association plays in the psychic life and it reduces all the elaborations of our experiences to association while the Gestalt is a psychological school that is dedicated to the study of perception. The first principle in Associationism states that complex ideas come from the association of simpler ones whereas Gestalt puts forth that images are perceived as a whole, as a shape or configuration and they aren’t a mere addition of their inherent parts. Índice III Gestalt thesis the mechanic information In 1910 Wertheimer begins to question himself the nature of perception. He showed that the way in which stimuli are perceived it will depend on The way in which they appear. This capability is got a priori during the childhood learning. Wertheimer called gestalt the factor that combined separate elements in a whole, producing this illusion. After Wertheimer Köhler and Koffka developed the concepts of the gestalt psychology. The gestalt psychologists introduced the concept of “organization”. For them, the perceived phenomena are organized forms and they are not sensitive agrupations. This is the main statement of the gestalt psychology: “Human perception is not the adding of sensitive data, but it gets through

Índice III A reassembling process that shapes a form from this information , a Gestalt, that is destroyed when is analyzed, and this experience is the main problem of psychology. ” There is not translation for the German term Gestalt; in German its means sometimes the shape an other times it is applied to the spatial appearance of objects, such as tables , chairs and trees. Learning, thinking, trying, acting, all of them have been treated as gestalten. The Gestalt psychologists consider that resolution of the problems does not limit himself to the past mechanic experience supposes the genesis of something that is not mimetic of.
