Proton Source RIL + Linac + Booster W. Pellico September 28 th 2018
Proton Source Database Devices Count - ACNET RIL Linac Booster # of Devices 2, 130 15, 000 16, 300 Over time the number of things you want to monitor and or control will always continue to increase. RIL 2 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico Linac Booster 1/16/2022
Proton Source – Types of Hardware RIL (much upgraded under PIP) • RFQ Injector Line (RIL) – IRM – HRM • 2401 and 2434 slot 0 – VME • VME 162 for timing – SRM – PLC (Upgraded Vacuum Systems) – Labview (Laser system) – Scopes – To view fast 15 Hz signals used for tuning 3 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico 1/16/2022
Proton Source – Types of Hardware Linac (some upgraded under PIP) • VME • IRM • SRM This is the basic Linac controls outside of vacuum, low level and Marx. Use of both 2401 and 2434 processors and IRM 162 – for misc timing. – A/D – D/A – PLC (Vacuum and Marx) • VXI (Low Level) • Embedded System for Marx (Dual Core Arm) The Linac uses some of the oldest and some of the newest controls hardware. IRM, MVME 162 - 5 VME, MVME 2104 & MVME 2434 - 42 SRM - 62 4 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico 1/16/2022
Proton Source – Types of Hardware Booster (little upgraded under PIP) • • 5 VME (Low Level and other areas) VXI (GMPS) IRM (RF mostly – 162 processor) CAMAC (Everywhere) PLC (Vacuum and some 400 Me. V hardware) HRM Dates of deployment by controls department: Labview (IPM) SRM 1992 IRM 1996 MVME 162 1996 MVME 2401 2001 MVME 2434 2004 Booster HRMs 2009 Pre. Acc HRMs 2012 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico 1/16/2022
CLOCK – Timing, Links • RIL and Linac – Use LCLK – basically same as TCLK • Booster – TCLK and one spot (GMPS) has MDAT which we hope to use in the future upgrade. • Mostly hardline – but fiber used in many spots Need to improve clock – to improve Booster operations The present system, which is synched to Booster GMPS, uses a clock that has limitations. 6 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico 1/16/2022
Future – RIL and Linac • RIL and Linac are supposed to go away when PIP II comes on line – however…. . • PIP II is the plan but need to ensure Linac operations • Linac may still be required to run for other reasons – Neutron Faculity – MTA Booster is required till it’s replaced with new RCS – 15 to 20 years Needs to accommodate PIP II operations 7 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico 1/16/2022
Future - Booster • GMPS – controls – Working towards a new embedded system capable of machine learning – Need to regulate at a higher precision – Uses VXI system • Low Level – Needs to complete recent upgrades and then accommodate PIP II – Uses VXI and VME and assorted CAMAC/NIM • Lots of one of boards – tied to CAMAC – – Could imagine using small ethernet boards tied directly to ACNET – Too many CAMAC cards – should reduce the number with improved performance (boards that speak to ACNEC but have RF input to lock to Booster RF clock. 8 Controls Workshop | W. Pellico 1/16/2022
Conclusion • Lots of old hardware – Use of obsolete parts which we have stockpiled • Instrumentation, which needs to interface to controls, is moving beyond the controls system. This is needed to meet beam demands BPMs, Marx Controllers, GMPS The need for small devices that can readily interface to ACNET has a place in the Proton Source – but lack controls support to be fully operational. This is IOE – and what is being taught. Get rid of Labview system – but only possible if alternate supported system is available Web based monitoring and possibly control 9 Controls Workshop | W.
