Conclusions Song blowing in the wind by Bob Dylan Music has served to help people communicate, enjoy, and express life to the world. In the dictionary, the word “protest” is explained as an “expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, or dissent, often in opposition to something a person is powerless to prevent or avoid. Protest music has played a huge part in our society. Becoming the heart and soul of many movements. Proven to be effective; protest music has motivated many historical events that have led us to where we are today. Origins of Protest Music. Vietnam war was an impact in the development and performance of protest song in America. Many Americans started to lose hope when thousands of soldiers died. Protest music began in the mid sixties, from 1963 - to 1973 during the war. It began slowly but managed to stay consistent throughout the time. Protest songs were always a part of American folk music; social activist and students began to take protest music to another level. People were angry and performers as well as composers joined in on the rebellion. The nineteen sixties brought events where artist like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs recorded songs against the Vietnam war and politics. How many roads must a man walk down Before you call him a man. How many seas must a white dove sail Before she sleeps in the sand Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly Before they're forever banned The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind The answer is blowin' in the wind Yes, 'n' how many years can a mountain exist Before it's washed to the sea Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist Before they're allowed to be free Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head And pretend that he just doesn't see The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind The answer is blowin' in the wind This song is about peace world peace , freedom And equal opportunity. Bob Dylan like many other Song writers was against the War in Vietnam and Would also join protest rallies to support peace. Protest music has been around for centuries and people they’ve been singing about it. And because music styles, human emotions, and social issues are so wide-ranging, protest songs are too. Music deals with a lot of issues in the 60 s and 70 s was the Vietnam era, anti-war music became the political conflict and dialog. Artists would focus on equal rights, freedom, but a in the 60 s and 70 s was mostly antiwar music. Anti-war music touched people on every tone. And that captured the long demoralizing impact of the Vietnam war. And like the anti-war movement itself, it began without a significant audience in the early sixties, but grew popular. In the 80 s was the Anti Reagan and the birth of rap. Protests the Reagan Administration mainstream protest songs attacking his policies, such as Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U. S. A. " (1984), and "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down" by The Ramones. Reagan came under significant criticism for the Iran-Contra Affair, in which it was discovered that his administration was selling arms to the radical Islamic. With the birth of rap protested the discrimination and poverty which the black community faced in the U. S. , focusing on police discrimination and with gangs, violence, drugs, and racial issues. In the 2000 s and up were dealing with racial issues with the death of Michael Brown the Black lives matter creating support of Black Lives Matter and anti-police brutality. Artist like Kendrick Lamar “ Alright” and Beyoncé’s “Freedom” support this issue. In conclusion protest music has been around for many generations healing, helping, and making people understand the events that are taking place all around them. The protest can be from a wide variety of events like war or modern day oppression like basic civil rights and racism. Many African Americans write lyrics about the terrors they faced growing in their hometown were there was murders, robberies, and the brutality of the local police. If people cant even trust their own police how would they want to trust a higher branch of the authority. There are many scenarios of how people over the world are going through some sort of struggle and the only way of coping with these terrors is through the power of their music. Acknowledgments Protest music served values and tactics of the movement, songs were first used only in rallies teaching nonviolence and eventually became clear that protest songs demonstrated civil disobedience action. Listeners deeply moved by the dignity and power of protest music. Music doesn't’t change governments but it can change people and people can change governments.
