Hot Water System Hazards § Water systems in buildings with low or no occupancy during renovation, seasonal low use, or pandemic related shut down are at risk of being contaminated with pathogenic Legionella bacteria. § In nature, Legionella bacteria live in fresh water and rarely cause illness. In a hot water system, Legionella can multiply if water is not properly maintained and may contain the bacteria could get into the air you breath without proper precautions. § Legionella, if present, thrive in water that is warm (77° - 108° F) and stagnant such as hot water plumbing systems. 10/30/2021 2

Hazard Exposure § Individuals may be exposed to this bacteria if buildings’ water systems are reopened without thoroughly flushing and disinfecting the plumbing, or without proper sanitizing of devices or fixtures that could aerosolize water such as a shower. § Exposure to this bacteria may also occur during routine maintenance or flushing of hot water tanks and lines to remove sediment. 10/30/2021 3

Infection § Infection can occur from inhalation or aspiration of contaminated aerosols from devices such as cooling towers, whirlpool spas, ornamental fountains, hot water plumbing systems, showers, and faucets. § Pathogenic Legionella bacteria can cause three clinically distinct illnesses with the most severe being: Legionnaires’ disease. § Symptoms begin 2 – 10 days after exposure and are similar to those of COVID-19 and include: cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Some patients also experience diarrhea, nausea, and confusion. Most patients are hospitalized, and treatment is required. 10/30/2021 4

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) § When flushing water or potentially generating aerosols in devices such as cooling towers, whirlpool spas, ornamental fountains, hot water plumbing systems, showers and faucets use the following PPE: • N-95 fit tested respirator • Safety glasses or goggles • Gloves 10/30/2021 5

Prior to Starting Work on Hot Water Plumbing Systems § Before starting any flushing work on cooling towers, whirlpool spas, ornamental fountains, hot water plumbing systems, showers, and faucets or similar systems: § Remind staff that they need to report to their supervisor and occupational health clinic if any signs or symptoms develop. § Remember to complete a first report of injury (FROI). § Contact a REM Industrial Hygienist or the Biological Safety Officer to discuss and to review PPE requirements or any questions you may have. 10/30/2021 6
