What is matter? MATTER is anything that has mass and volume. MASS is the measure of the number of atoms within an object VOLUME is the measure of how much space an object fills/occupies

Physical Properties of Matter By using our five senses (touch, smell, sound, sight and taste) we may observe the characteristics/properties of matter. These characteristics are called Physical Properties These include QUALITATIVE and QUANTITATIVE properties…. do you remember the difference? ?

States of Matter One of the first physical properties observed is its state (i.

States of Matter One of the first physical properties observed is its state (i. e. whether it is solid, liquid or gaseous (gas /vapour).

There are three states of matter:

Questions for determining Physical Properties observed using your senses: Colour Lustre Conductivity Density Ductility

Questions for determining Physical Properties observed using your senses: Colour Lustre Conductivity Density Ductility Texture (feel) Odour (smell) Hardness Is it black, white, colourless, red, green, blue, …? Is it shiny? Is it dull? Does the material conduct electricity? How much substance is found per unit of volume? Can the solid be pulled into wires? Is it fine, coarse, smooth, gritty? Is it odourless, spicy, sharp, burnt? Is it resistance of a solid to being scratched or dented?

Questions for determining Physical Properties observed using your senses: Malleability Can be hammered into

Questions for determining Physical Properties observed using your senses: Malleability Can be hammered into different shapes. Brittle objects shatter quickly because it is not malleable. Viscosity Refers to how easily liquid flows: the thicker the liquid, the higher the viscosity. Clarity Is it transparent, translucent, opaque? Is a measure of how much light passes through an object. It can be: transparent - lets all light pass through, translucent - lets some light pass through, opaque - lets no light pass through. Taste Melting and Boiling Points Solubility Is it sweet, sour, salty, bitter? NOTE: DO NOT TASTE ANYTHING WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR TEACHER!!!!!! Is it a gas, liquid, …? The temperatures at which substances change state. The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent – e. g. water.

Chemical Properties of Matter A chemical property describes the behaviour of a substance as it becomes a new substance – associated with chemical reactions. These characteristics are called Chemical Properties.

Combustibility The ability of a substance to react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide,

Combustibility The ability of a substance to react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy. If a substance is combustible or flammable, it will burn when exposed to a flame. A substance that will not burn is described as nonflammable.

Reactivity with acid The ability of a substance to react with an acid.
