Growing Up Ø Prometheus was the son of Iapetos and Themis Ø He had 3 brothers , Atlas , Epimetheus, and Menoetius Ø The goddess Athene taught him- architecture, mathematics, navigation, and medicine Ø He in turn taught these things to humans Ø Sometimes referred to as the giver of fire
Prometheus In General Ø Was a titan of forethought and crafty counsel who was entrusted with the task of molding mankind out of clay Ø Also referred to as the champion of mankind Ø He wasn’t a god he was a titan Ø He was worshipped by craftsmen
Conflicts Ø He attempted to make the lives of his creation better but that brought him into conflict with Zeus Ø He stole fire from Zeus and gave it to his mortals Ø Zeus punished him by having him tied to a rock while an eagle ate his liver Ø His liver grew back each time it was eaten Ø Heracles released him from the rock
Conflicts (continued) Ø Hercules used an arrow to kill the eagle that was eating Prometheus’s liver Ø Zeus created a flood to destroy all living creatures on earth that Prometheus created
