PROLACTIN It is produced in the anterior pituitary gland, uterus, brain, and Immune system. How it works It works in the mammary glands It stimulates milk production, and prepares mammary glands for lactation Lactocytes receive prolactin from the blood. This stimulates the synthesis of components to make milk
ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE (ACTH) It is made in the anterior pituitary Gland How it works In works below the thalamus for the adrenal axis ACTH works to regulate levels of cortisol ACTH works by attaching to ACTH receptors which stimulates the release of the enzyme called adenylyl cyclase.
OXYTOCIN It is made in the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary How it works It works in the brain and cervix It causes cervix contractions and plays a role in social behaviour Oxytocin works by stimulating the uterine muscles which causes contractions during childbirth. Oxytocin also acts as a chemical messenger in the brain. It is released during social interactions which is used to form relationships.
LUTEINIZING HORMONE It is produced in the anterior pituitary gland How it works It works in the ovaries and testes Luteinizing hormone is used during ovulation to release an egg and to produced testosterone It works in ovulation by stimulating the ovaries to produce oestradiol then to release an egg. The hormone produces testosterone by stimulating the Leydig cells
FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE It is produced in the pituitary gland. How it works It is used in both the testes and ovaries. It works to help develop puberty. Follicle Stimulating hormone stimulates growth of follicles in the ovaries for women. For men, it is used in Sertori cells in the testes to produce semen.
ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE OR VASOPRESSIN It is produced in the hypothalamus. How it works Vasopressin is used in the circulatory system and kidney. Antidiuretic regulates water levels in the blood. It works by having the kidney reduce some of the water content in urine and transferring the water back to the blood, conserving water if needed
