Critical Thinking and Bloom’s Taxonomy
Project-Based Learning • Project based learning is grounded in the authenticity or real-life application of the research. Students working as a team are given a "driving question" to respond to or answer, then directed to create an artifact (or artifacts) to present their gained knowledge. The core idea of project-based learning is that real-world problems capture students' interest and provoke serious thinking as the students acquire and apply new knowledge in a problem-solving context.
Project-Based Learning • is organized around an open-ended driving question or challenge. • creates a need to know essential content and skills. • requires critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and various forms of communication, often known as "21 st Century Skills. " • incorporates feedback and revision. • results in a publicly presented product or performance. • requires inquiry to learn and/or create something new. • allows some degree of student voice and choice.
Problem-Based Learning • Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of problem solving. Students learn both thinking strategies and domain knowledge. • The PBL format originated from the medical school of thought, and is now used in other schools of thought too. • The goals of PBL are to help the students develop flexible knowledge, effective problem solving skills, self-directed learning, effective collaboration skills and intrinsic motivation.
Problem-Based Learning • Working in groups, students identify what they already know, what they need to know, and how and where to access new information that may lead to resolution of the problem. • The role of the instructor (known as the tutor in PBL) is to facilitate learning by supporting, guiding, and monitoring the learning process. • Problem-based learning is a similar pedagogic approach, however, problem-based approaches structure students' activities more by asking them to solve specific (open-ended) problems rather than relying on students to come up with their own problems in the course of completing a project.
