The Project STIR team: TM �provides self-advocacy and leadership tools �for and by people with/without disabilities.
Self-Determination is. . . �Freedom: you decide what happens. �Authority: you decide how to spend your money. �Support: you get help for what is important to you. �Responsibility: you follow rules, laws and help others in the community. �Confirmation: show everyone you can – just do it!

Shift the Power- make your own life choices Self-advocates and their families/allies �Need info about services and the system. �Want to change how the system works- change rules for more choice �Want enough money when it reaches the person it was meant to help

Let’s get ready for YOU to practice how to teach others!
Doing a presentation? What should you remember? �Stand straight �Look people in the eye when speaking �Have the information you need close by �Dress professionally �Be nice and kind during the discussion. �Listen to others and respond �What else?
How can you get started teaching others? �What? – Project STIR TM �Who? –Who will you invite? How many people? �Where? - What location will make it easy for people to get there? �When? – What days and times are best for those you want to invite? �How? – Will you teach alone or with others?
Leading Scenes and Role Plays WHY? �Tell a story. �Show feelings �True characters �You can try Different choices Changing a situation Thinking about results.
Tips for leading a scene 1. Set the scene - introduce who/what/ where of scene and choose a name. 2. Use props/costumes for each character. 3. Say “Action” to start. 4. Say “Freeze” then ask group to name feelings or suggest what happens next.
Keep It Alive – Make it fun! �Don’t Lecture --- Say it in 30 seconds or less! �Get people involved in hands-on activities: Role Plays Brainstorming Problem Solving Discussions �Pay attention to your audience. Be flexible! �Have Fun!!!

Why this approach? It causes emotions and feelings �Brain research: Emotion is tied to memory �People see the difference between feelings/behaviors/thoughts �It puts people in role as leaders

Self-Advocacy �As a self-advocate, you make choices. Making choices means you decide, but you can and should use information from others who can help you. �Your choices are important as they take you to YOUR future.
Get involved in your Community. . . �Churches �Libraries �Civic Groups �Town Council �County Board of DD �Neighborhood groups �Hospitals
Ways to get involved. . . �Join a committee or board �Visit senior citizens �Spend time at the church daycare �Take care of animals at the shelter �Deliver flowers and mail at the hospital
