MS Project Task Types n Fixed Units, Fixed Duration, Fixed Work n Used to calculate duration of tasks and subsequently their finish dates n Duration = Work / Units n Task Type determines which piece of the equation will remain “fixed”, and which is calculated n Default is fixed units Task Type If you revise units. . . If you revise duration. . . If you revise work. . . Fixed Units Duration is recalculated. Work is recalculated. Duration is recalculated. Fixed Work Duration is recalculated. Units are recalculated. Duration is recalculated. Fixed Duration Work is recalculated. Units are recalculated.
Effort-driven Scheduling n Assigning or removing resources on a task changes duration or units based on the number of resources assigned – Total work does not change n Work is first calculated when assigning a resource to a task n After resources are first assigned, Work does not change when adding or removing resources n Effort-driven scheduling only takes effect when resources are added to or removed from a task n Effort-driven scheduling is not applied when you change work, duration, or unit values for resources already assigned to a task n Fixed Duration, Amount of work distributed to the resources assigned changes n Fixed Units, Duration changes n Not Effort-driven is default. Fixed Work is always effort-driven (cannot be changed). For effort driven tasks: Task Type If you assign additional resources. . . Fixed Units Duration is shortened. Fixed Work Duration is shortened. Fixed Duration Decreases the individual unit values for resources.
