CONTEXT OF THE ACTION AND NEEDS Trafficking in human beings (THB) has affected 20. 532 registered victims during 2015 and 2016 in the EU. The ANALYSIS countries of first arrival and transit for migration flows are particularly concerned with the issue. Italy is the 3 rd EU country for registered victims of trafficking for absolute numbers, while Austria and Cyprus are in the top five for registered victims in proportion to population (“Data collection on THB in the EU”, EU, 2018). Greece and Malta are also affected by THB for the purpose of both sexual and labour exploitation. Both countries have been listed as “Tier 2” ranking in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report (2018, US Department of State), which means that both Government do not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of THB according US standards. Victims of trafficking have specific and often complex mental health needs, since traumatic experiences while being trafficked may induce or exacerbate mental disorders. Many studies show that depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and self-harm and attempted suicide are common among trafficking survivors (Ottisova et al, 2016 Oram et al 2016). Research and testimonies of mental healthcare providers demonstrate correlation between dissociation and human trafficking. Furthermore, social stressors such as unstable housing, insecure immigration status and lack of employment or other access to means of sustenance might exacerbate psychological symptoms. Social support and techniques to regulate emotions and to cope with dissociation help to meet the trafficked people’s mental health needs (Domoney et al, 2015). 2
