Student Ground Rules n No put-downs, be respectful n Everyone try to participate n Confidentiality – No personal identification of sensitive information. No names with stories – If you discuss what was said in class you may not use names. n What is said in your table group stays in your table group.

What happens? n Today you’ll learn more about how cigarettes and marijuana affect people. We’ll talk about exactly what happens when you smoke a cigarette or joint.
What can happen when you smoke cigarettes? First Time cough Breath smells choke headache Heart beats faster After a While After a long time addicted Lung cancer Can’t breathe as well Heart attack Lung capacity decreases Respiratory diseases: emphysema Smell, yellow teeth Wrinkles Heart disease
What is addiction? n It is when the body physically needs nicotine to feel okay. If you smoke one or two cigarettes a day for four or five days in a row, you can become addicted. Nearly one-third of people who try a single cigarette eventually develop dependence on tobacco.
Why does smoking cause your heart to beat faster? n Nicotine is a stimulant – it elevates blood pressure, central nervous system functions such as breathing and heart rate.
Does it help to stop smoking? n Yes – and right away! n At 24 hours after quitting, the chance of getting a heart attack decreases. n After 48 hours: nerve endings start regrowing and the ability to taste and smell is enhanced. n After 1 -9 months: coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease.
Does it help to stop smoking? n After 1 year: risk of heart disease decreases to half that of a smoker. n After 5 -15 years: stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked. n After 10 years: risk of lung cancer is half that of smokers. n After 15 years: risk of heart disease decreases to that of those who have never smoked.
Is it harmful to be around second hand smoke? n Yes. It causes lung cancer and heart disease. Young children are especially at risk. It can cause respiratory and ear infections and make children with asthma sicker.
