Prohibition In 1919, Congress passed the 18 th amendment, banning the sale and manufacture of alcohol. The law took affect in January of 1920.

Consumerism Economic prosperity in the 1920 s was largely based on average Americans having enough money to buy houses and cars. Companies offered installment plans (like the one Ford offered in this ad) so that people could pay for their large purchases in pieces. This created wealth for average Americans and also jobs for Americans who were involved with the manufacturing of cars and houses.
Scopes Trial In 1925, the state of Tennessee passed a law that made it a crime to teach evolution in science classrooms, requiring the teaching of Christian belief of creationism. John Scopes was a biology teacher who broke that law. The case drew national attention for the discussion about the conflicts between science and religion. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the law was later changed.
