WHAT ARE PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS VERBS? • Verbs can appear in any one of three progressive/continuous tenses: – Past progressive – Present progressive – Future progressive
CREATING THE PROGRESSIVE VERBS A. K. A CONTINUOUS FORM • Use a form of “to be” and add it to the present participle form of the verb. What helping verb you add depends on if the noun is singular or plural and when the action is happening, past, present, or future. • ”to be” • • • Am Is Are Was Were • Will be • Shall be
PRESENT PARTICIPLES • We already learned how to create past participles by adding an -ed ending to most verbs. • To create the present participles add and –ing to the ending of verbs. • Examples – Thinking running jumping reading jogging – skimming typing creating singing
TIPS FOR PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS • 1. Always use the present participle (-ing) to the ending of the main verb. • 2. Always use the helping verbs: • Was/were + present participle(-ing) – past tense • Am/is/are + present participle (-ing) - present tense • Will be + present participle (-ing) - future tense

PAST PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS HELPING VERBS • Use: –Was – singular noun –Were – plural noun
PAST PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS • To create the past progressive/continuous form of the verb you will be using the helping verbs was and were along with the present participle form of the verb. • Remember that creating the present participle form of the verb has you adding –ing to the end of the action verb. – Participle Perfect) Past Progressive/Continuous form – Singing = – Running = – Hunting = – Thinking = – Creating = – Judging = – Cleaning = was/were singing was/were running was/were hunting was/were thinking was/were creating was/were judging was/were cleaning (Past had sung had run had hunted had thought had created had judged had cleaned
PRACTICE PAST PROGRESSIVE • Change the simple tense verb into past progressive/continuous. • 1. The children cleaned the store. • 2. The boy hunted the deer. • 3. My mom ran a race. • 4. The teachers thought about how to teach the lesson.
PRESENT PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS • Remember – add a helping verb in the “to be” form in front of the Present Participle for (-ing) of the action verb. You are creating verb phrases. • To create a present progressive phrases use the helping verbs: –Am (with I) –Is (singular) –Are (plural)
PRESENT PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS PHRASES – Present Participle Progressive/Continuous (Present Perfect) – Singing = am/is/are singing have/has sung – Running = run am/is/are running have/has – Hunting = am/is/are hunting – Thinking = thought am/is/are thinking have/has – Creating = created am/is/are creating have/has hunted
PRACTICE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS • Change the simple verb to the present progressive/continuous form. • 1. I sing the song beautifully. • 2. The children dance around the studio. • 3. The musician plays the song to the audience. • 4. My mother washes the dishes.
FUTURE PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS PHRASES • Add will be to the present tense participle form of the verb (-ing). – Present Participle Future Progressive/Continuous (Future Perfect) – Singing = will be singing will have sung – Running = will be running will have run – Hunting = will be hunting will have hunted – Thinking = will be thinking will have thought – Creating = will be creating will have created – Judging = will be judging will have judged – Cleaning = will be cleaning will have cleaned
FUTURE PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS PRACTICE • Change the simple verb to the future progressive/continuous form. • 1. The piano player will play the song tomorrow night. • 2. I will stay. • 3. The Moscow State Circus will perform in Cheltenham for the next 3 weeks. • 4. It will rain the entire week.
