Curriculum Updates The college views maintaining updated and quality curriculum as one of its most essential duties. Last year the Academic Senate voted to remove all courses with outdated course outlines from the college catalog. Departments were made aware of this policy and given until November, 2012 to update all outlines that were out of compliance.

Discontinuance Policy The college noted a need for an expedited viability process to address programs that had required courses that can no longer be offered as a result of out of date curriculum. The policy includes A default recommendation of discontinuance A robust public notification A period to update all out-of-compliance course outlines An investigation of impacted students and recommendation for the sun-setting of programs

Timeline December 2012 An expedited viability request is made by Academic Senate President to address 12 Associate Degree programs and 15 Certificate of Achievement programs that archived courses needed for program completion. A viability review committee (VRC) was convened March 2013 VRC meets to develop a Preliminary Notice of Program Discontinuance Pending Response Public Notice posted on the college homepage Curriculum Chair works with departments to update curriculum or develop program modifications All but 3 programs are amended as needed to maintain program viability VRC reviews data on impacted students and requests additional data from the Department Chair May 2013 ELAC Shared Governance Council and Academic Senate approve viability report and recommend discontinuance to the College President

Program Impact Insurance: Property and Casualty – Degree An analysis of student enrollment revealed that required courses INSUR 100, INSUR 103, INSUR 104, and INSUR 185 have never been offered at ELAC INSUR 101 was last offered during the Fall 2009 term and INSUR 102 was last offered in Spring 2010. Program Impact Insurance: Property and Casualty – Certificate The certificate program requires the same major courses as the degree, but without General Education The VRC has determined that discontinuance of the Insurance: Property and Casualty AA Degree and Certificate programs will have minimal impact on the College and its stakeholders. Ø Ø Ø In consultation with the college’s Articulation Officer, the committee learned that the archived courses are not UC: CSU transferable An analysis of program completers yielded a total of 0. Faculty, students, and staff will not be affected because a number of required courses were never offered and no curricular/programmatic changes are needed. There will be no economic impact on the community because the program never had an effect on the community. No concerns were raised through the public notice process.

Program Impact Microcomputer Programming Specialist The VRC also determined that discontinuance of the Microcomputer Programming Specialist program will have minimal impact on the College and its stakeholders. Ø Ø Ø An analysis of program completers revealed that 4 students have completed the program since its initial offering in Summer 2009. A review of the data revealed low enrollment in some of the required courses, (CO SCI 233 and CO SCI 239). Additionally, CO SCI 239 was last offered in Spring 2009. In consultation with the Department Chair, the Curriculum Chair learned that there are curricular and programmatic redundancies between this program and Computer Science Information Technology – Programming and Computer Science Information Technology –Microcomputers. No concerns were raised through the public notice process.
