PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY (PLC) Dr. Lourdes Morales
WHAT IS PLC - OBJECTIVES Icebreaker What is PLC Ensuring that Students Learn Culture of Collaboration Focus on Results Hard Work and Commitment
PLC Learning for all. Grade level teaching teams. School committees. National professional organizations.
ENSURING THAT STUDENTS LEARN “FROM A FOCUS ON TEACHING TO A FOCUS ON LEARNING” What do we want each student to learn? How will we know when each student has learned it? How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning?
ENSURING THAT STUDENTS LEARN The last question separates learning communities from traditional schools. School wide and systematic approaches to address learning issues. PLC responds to students issues must be: Timely Based on intervention rather than remediation Directive
CULTURE OF COLLABORATION Create structures Collaboration is not Camaraderie Congeniality Consensus on operational procedures
CULTURE OF COLLABORATION Collaboration is: Working together to achieve the collective purpose. Case of Boones Mill Elementary (group discussion). Removing barriers to success. Intended curriculum vs. implemented curriculum. Teachers must move from: What we are expected to teach? to How will we know when each student has learned?
ENSURING THAT STUDENTS LEARN “FROM A FOCUS ON TEACHING TO A FOCUS ON LEARNING” What do we want each student to learn? How will we know when each student has learned it? How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning?
FOCUS ON RESULTS Working together and individually to identify the current level of student’s achievement. Establishing a goal to improve the current level. Working together to achieve that goal. Providing periodic evidence of that progress.
FOCUS ON RESULT DRIP-Data Rich/Information Poor. Turn data into useful and relevant information for staff. Develop common formative assessment. Compare students results. Each teacher has access to the ideas, materials, strategies, and talents of the entire team.
HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT Powerful new way of working together that profoundly affect the practices of the school. Focus on learning rather than teaching. Work collaboratively on matters related to learning. Hold itself accountable for the kind of results that fuel continual improvement.
