Professional Development Framework What does it mean for WPGHS? Based on presentation by Pat Mahoney
Up to this point The Professional Development Framework was developed by the Teachers Federation and DEC working together. It is centred around teachers taking control and responsibility for their own Professional Development.
Who does it involve? EVERYBODY? ? ? All permanent and temporary staff are involved in the Professional Development Framework process. However, there is no obligation for day-to-day casuals.
Setting Goals Ø Use the prescribed template for your professional development plan (PDP) Ø Goals are based around “How will I grow as a professional? ” Ø It may help you to do a bit of backwards mapping to identify your goals e. g. - Look at the School Plan / programs etc - For Teachers …. . “What professional learning do I need to do in order to support the students to achieve? ” - For executive …. “How do I need to grow to support teachers to help the students achieve? ”
Setting Goals Ø Goals may be wrapped over years but evidence of progress needs to be provided Ø THREE goals recommended this year because of the short time frame. Ø The THREE goals need to relate to the School Plan + ONE personal goal if required. Ø Can do things that you have already achieved this year. Ø You need to provide evidence to your coach/mentor/supervisor Goals aren’t measured they are evidenced
Setting Goals Ø If you are already an institute teacher it is really important that you are creating your PDPs with your reports in mind. Ø Don’t reinvent that wheel …. .
Timelines 2015 Ø DEC requirement that all teachers were trained about Professional Development Framework (PDF) by end of Term 2, 2015 Ø Standardised presentation about PDF used across NSW Ø Self Assessment will need to be completed in Term 3 Ø Completed by self and is about 300 words and given to coach/mentor/supervisor Ø At end of year, need to provide evidence at the annual review meeting + start to think about goals for next year

Lesson Observations Ø Needs to be observations of at least two lessons by coach/mentor/supervisor Ø It can be negotiated parts of lessons, full lessons or multiple lessons as required Ø Observations style can be differentiated to suited to meet the needs of the staff involved Ø NB; DPs will also have lessons observed by a coach/mentor/supervisor
Coach/mentor/supervisor Ø Will assist by observing TWO negotiated lessons. These observation Buddies need to be able to assist you with needs of your PDP. May need negotiation with Principal. Ø It can be negotiated parts of lessons, full lessons or multiple lessons as required Ø Does the school wish to develop a lesson checklist? Ø All staff need to keep a record of discussions with staff regarding professional development and observations etc. as written feedback will be required at the end of the year. Ø Staff are responsible for keeping their own paperwork

Accreditation Ø 45 % of staff are not in the current accreditation process (Pre October 2004 entry on service) Ø Satisfactory completion of PDP is sufficient to be automatically accredited Ø High school are being accredited first (by end 2016) Ø Primary schools accredited by end of 2017 Ø By beginning of 2018, all teachers will be accredited Ø In 2017, all staff will pay fees and undertake maintenance
The Future - Maintenance Ø Following 2016, accredited pre-Oct 2004 staff will be issued with an institute number Ø Once an accreditation number is received, teachers begin the process of Maintenance with BOSTES Ø This will mean the logging of 100 hours of professional activities/ training over 5 years Ø 50 hours are of institute accredited activities and the other 50 hours can be teacher identified activities

Ø SOOOO … get started in Term 4 2016 to beat the rush. Ø My. PL@ is being worked on to provide key dates etc for staff
How do I start Ø There will be a set of written set of WPGHS guidelines issued Ø Look at your PDP … who be can help with observations best suited to your goals? Ø Ask that person to be involved Ø Plan and document Professional Learning designed to meet your plan Ø Use My. PL@ if your are needing to keep reminders
