Hebrews 12: 14 -16 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully… 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. His birthright was sacred. He placed so little value on his sacred birthright that he sold it for bowl of stew.

People Guilty of Profanity • • The man picking up sticks profaned a holy day. The King in the Temple profaned a holy place. Belshazzar profaned holy vessels. The Sons of Sceva profaned the holy name of Jesus by misusing it for a devious purpose. The severity of their punishment reveals God’s abhorrence of profanity.

Leviticus 10: 1 -3 10 Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2 So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. 3 And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified. ’”

Leviticus 10: 8 -11 Then the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying: 9 “Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, 10 that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, 11 and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them by the hand of Moses. ”

Furnishings of the Tabernacle • And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. (Lev. 4: 15) • But they shall not go in to watch while the holy things are being covered, lest they die. ” (Lev. 4: 20)

In the New Testament • No Holy place, material vessels, etc. • 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. (John 4: 21 -23)

God’s Name is Holy • “Holy and awesome is His name. ” (Ps. 11: 9) • “For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. ” (Luke 1: 49) • “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. ” (Ex. 20: 7)

God’s Name is Holy The Jews would not say God’s Name! They got as close as possible (Mt. 23: 16 -22) Some of us may do the same. Profane use of God’s name increasingly common in out time. • Disrespect for God’s name is disrespect for God Himself. • •

The Lord’s Supper is Holy • Not the bread or fruit of the vine but the occasion. • 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’ s body. (1 Cor. 11: 27 -29)

Other Holy Things • “…from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3: 15). • “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day. ” (Rev. 1: 10) • “…teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. ” (Col. 3: 16)

The Body of a Christian • “Do • you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the member of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not!” (1 Cor. 6: 15). “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. (vs. 20 -21)

The Body of a Christian • “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. ” (Rom. 12: 1) • “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. ” (Rom. 12: 2)
