SE T • THE SET REFERS TO THE PHYSICAL SPACE THAT A SCENE IS SHOT IN. THE SPACE MAY BE AN ACTUAL LOCATION OR IT MAY BE A COMPLETELY FABRICATED PLACE.
COSTUMES • COSTUMES REFER TO ANY ARTICLE OF CLOTHING THAT AN ACTOR WEARS DURING THEIR PERFORMANCE. A COSTUME IS NOT SIMPLY CLOTHING THAT A PERSON WEARS BUT AN EXTENSION OF PERSONALITY OR PLACE.
MAKEUP • MAKEUP CAN GO WELL BEYOND MAKING PEOPLE LOOK “ATTRACTIVE” ON SCREEN. MAKEUP ENHANCES A PERSON’S TRAITS, TRANSPORTS US TO A WORLD OF FANTASY, OR CHARGES OUR EMOTIONAL RESPONSE.
SPECIAL EFFECT (SPX) • SPECIAL EFFECTS REFERS TO ANY PHYSICAL OR DIGITAL CREATION THAT CREATES THE ILLUSION OF SOMETHING THAT REALLY EXISTS BUT DOESN’T.
COMPOSITE SHOT • A COMPOSITE SHOT IS ANY FORM OF FILM THAT REQUIRES LAYERING OF MULTIPLE SHOTS TO CREATE A FINAL IMAGE. THIS MAY INVOLVE REAR PROJECTION, MATTE PAINTING, GREEN SCREEN OR OTHER SIMILAR DEVICES.
PERIOD • A PERIOD PIECE IS A GENERAL TERM IN FILM THAT REFERS TO A MOVIES WHOSE ACTION TAKES PLACE IN A NONCONTEMPORARY SETTING. THESE FILMS OFTEN USE EXTENSIVE USE OF COSTUMES, MUSIC, AND SETTING TO RECREATE A WORLD THAT NO-LONGER EXISTS.
GENRES • GENRE REFERS TO FILMS THAT FALL WITHIN A CATEGORY OF FILM TYPES THAT SHARE COMMON ASPECTS. THESE GENRES OFTEN HAVE THEIR OWN “RULES” THAT BUILD AS MORE FILMS ARE ADDED TO THE STYLE.
MINIATURES • MINIATURES ARE MODELS ARE FIGURES THAT ARE GREATLY REDUCED IN SCALE BUT ARE THEN ARTICULATED TO MAKE AN ILLUSION OF REALITY.
