Process Analysis Writing Modes Presentation
What is process analysis? Process Analysis is a writing piece detailing a series of steps or actions that have an outcome, usually the same result if performed. This writing mode has the following characteristics: • Chronological-it is organized according to time • Replicable- its actions can be duplicated • Instructional or informative-the writing piece can tell readers how do something or explain how something is done.
What are real life examples of process analysis? • • Registration steps on a website Steps on how to bake a cake Explanation on how a bill becomes law Explains how to apply for a job There are two types of process analysis: informative and instructional
Instructional Process Analysis • Tells readers what to do in a step by step fashion • Uses sentences written in command form, but does not utilize the word “You”. • Uses a sequential format to communicate the steps • Uses clear sentences that “show” the reader how the process is completed in addition to “telling” the reader how the process should be done.
Informative Process Analysis • Shows readers how something occurs or how something is completed • Written using the 3 rd person point of view • Written in paragraph form • Written with transitional words: “first, ” “second, ” “third, ” “then, ” “after, ” etc. • Does not require the reader to perform steps, but does explain the concept.
Areas to consider when writing a process analysis • Audience: who would need to know about this process? Why would the reader need to know this process? • Purpose: process analyses are written to get a result or to discuss the significance of results or outcomes in a process. • Thesis statement: You should tell the reader what the significance of the process and highlight important points about it that you will further discuss in the essay.
Presentation of Process Essay • Uses a “Visual Aid” to demonstrate steps of a process. • Contains all essential steps so that the process can be duplicated • Maintains the audience’s attention throughout using an interesting lead in and understandable instructions.
