Procedures and Expectations Mr. Verlei rm. 302
Office Hrs. • All meetings with me must be by appt. Email or speak with me directly to set up a meeting. Do not expect to see me if I do not verify. • I am free to meet before or after school Mon, Tues, and Thurs. • Before school 8 -8: 30 • After school 3: 30 -4 • I do not meet with students during lunch or my free period (2 nd)
Office Hrs. • Office hours are for • Extra help, tutoring, reteaching, etc. • Retrieving notes/assignments/etc. you missed due to an absence • Making up a test or quiz you missed due to an absence • Questions, concerns, philosophical discourse.
Late Work • If an assignment is late, the highest grade achievable is a 50%. • This the No. 1 reason for failing grades in my class.
What is late? • Late is after I announce my final call for assignments and close the manila folder. • Occasionally, there will be special circumstances where due dates are changed for specific people for a variety of reasons; in those cases, work is late if it is not handed to me by the end of English class.
Once Work is Late • The best grade you can receive is a 50%, and that’s if you did the assignment perfectly. I will still take points off of late work if it is in any way incomplete or incorrect, just as I would if it had been turned in on time. • Once work is deemed late, it can be turned in any day before the day grades close for the quarter (that will usually be the Tuesday before the end of the quarter). For example, late work from August can be turned in any day before the end of Quarter 1.
If you are Absent • It is your responsibility to find out what you missed. • First, you should retrieve the daily agenda, objective(s), and bellwork assignment from someone in your group. • Second, you should speak with me before or after school to find out if you missed lecture, notes, handouts, etc.
If you are Absent • If you miss 1 day of school, you have 3 days to complete any work before it becomes late. • If you miss 2 consecutive days of school, you have 3 days to complete any work before it becomes late. • If you miss 3 consecutive days of school, you have 3 days to complete any work before it becomes late. • If you miss more than 3 consecutive days of school, you need to schedule a meeting with me during my office hours where we can come up with a plan to catch you up.
If I am Absent • You will treat substitute teachers with respect. • Whenever a visitor comes to our class, all of you become representatives of HLS, and I expect your behavior to be even better than it is when I am here. • If your name is left by the sub, I will make sure you receive the harshest punishment possible.
Family Vacations or Trips* • You should be doing work over your vacation. That way you can resume with the rest of the class on the same page (or near) when you return. • It is your responsibility to tell all your teachers when you’re going to be gone for family vacations or trips so they can provide you with work. • You are still entirely responsible for the material you miss.
Emergencies • In the event of a lock-out, lock-down, or fire drill, talking ceases until I give the okay. If you are disruptive during one of these drills, you will receive consequences. • Lock-outs – remain in room and continue class as normal. • Lock-down – remain in class and completely silent. • Fire-drill – a single-file line is formed by the door. We turn left and exit out the double doors, through the gate and towards the fields. Once we are safely in the fields, we stop, turn around and face the front of the line. Once here, you are allowed to speak to other people in your class and never under any circumstances students from another class.
Emergencies • Fire-drill • In a calm and orderly fashion, form a single file line at the classroom door. • We turn left and exit out the double doors, through the gate and towards the fields. Once we are safely in the fields, we stop, turn around and face the front of the line. You do not move from this spot until instructed. • Once we are lined up in the field, you are permitted to speak to other people in your class and never under any circumstances students from another class.
Materials • You need: • A dedicated English notebook or 3 ring binder with loose leaf paper • A dedicated English folder • Writing utensils • If you ever need to borrow anything, you’re welcome to it. Just please ask, first.
Notebook/Binder • Every day you come in the following items will be projected onto the smart board. You must copy them all down, word-for-word, and in the same order: • The Date • Agenda – what we’re going to do for the day • Objective(s) – what you’re supposed to be able to do when it’s all over • Below the objective(s) is the bellwork. You do not need to copy down the bellwork question(s); you only need to complete them.
Notebook/Binder • A few times a month, I will check your notebook or binder. • I will ask each individual student to show me a specific date. I will be looking for: • How easy was it for the student to find that date? • Are all the elements present? Date, Agenda, Objective(s), and completed Bellwork? • Has the Bellwork been answered thoroughly using A. C. E. format and complete sentences?
A. C. E. Format • is going to become a very familiar paragraph format for you this year: • A. – answer the question; restate question in your response • C. – Cite text evidence; comes from text or data, not your opinions • E. – Elaborate your ideas; Connect with ideas or experience; explain why “C” answers “A”.
Monday’s Bellwork • will always be the same: a brief reflection of the week before and setting a small goal for the current week. • For the Reflection, you will look back on the previous week of school and discuss something academic that you could have done better. • For the small goal, you will look forward to the week and set a small goal for yourself beyond your typical academic responsibility. For example, I will do my homework is an invalid goal because you’re already supposed to do your homework.
Class Discussions • We use a forum model for discussion: one person speaks at a time while everyone else listens and I moderate. • Side conversations are incredibly rude and will not be tolerated. • Speak up. I can’t hear you. The people across the room from you can’t hear you. Even the person sitting next to you probably can’t hear. • Arguing is annoying and will not be tolerated. • Please feel free to disagree with me or anyone as long as it is done in a polite manner.
There are 2 Types of Questions • Whole Class Questions which yield answers which can benefit everyone, • and You and Me questions, which yield answers which only benefit you. • Whole Class Questions are always welcome. • Please save You and Me questions for when the majority of the class is otherwise engaged
Group-work • is a huge part of my class, and you will receive a Group-work grade at the end of each quarter. Your grade will be based on the following criteria • Contribution – Actively on task and working towards your group’s goal • Positivity/Respect – Actively cultivating a positive and respectful group environment • Participation – Actively engaging in discussion and collaboration with your group members?
Electronic Devices • may be used when I incorporate their use into an activity or lesson • Unauthorized use of electronic devices will result in disciplinary action
Things I wanted to share that really had no home in this presentation, so I put them at the end • I am not perfect. Please allow me to make mistakes from time to time, and I will afford you the same courtesy. • All fair rules of conduct trace back to respect. If you’re not sure if you should or shouldn’t do something, figure out if it disrespects anyone in the room. If so, I’d avoid it. • If there is anything you need, any questions or concerns you have, please tell me. If you do not feel comfortable telling me, tell another teacher.
Things I wanted to share that really had no home in this presentation, so I put them at the end* • Our time is precious. Be here and ready to go before the bell rings. • Water is the only thing you’re allowed to drink in class • If there is anything you need, any questions or concerns you have, please tell me. If you do not feel comfortable telling me, tell another teacher.
Hall Pass* • Any time you leave my room, take the Baseball Hall Pass or the Green Apple Hall Pass. If you don’t have these on you and are stopped by a teacher, you may be subject to disciplinary action.
