DEFINITION � Procedural texts are part of daily life. Its tells us how something is done through steps or actions. � We often use procedural texts, even though we rarely realise it. The examples are when we follow the instructions of a recipe on television, read a manual on, how to turn on a CD player, do a simple scientific experiment, etc.
The structure of a procedural text • Goal/purpose Example: Let’s Make Your Own Aquarium Ecosystem • Materials (precise information, how long, how many, what type). Example: water plants, a bucket • Steps: What to do Example: Spread the gravels over base of the tank. • The frame (commands, details, how, with what) Example: Put the gravel in a net and pour a jug full of water on it. • The covering (where, action verbs). Example: Place the tank in bright light
The Example of Procedural Text INGREDIENTS 1 Small chicken, cut into pieces 2 cups fresh coconut milk (or 200 ml thick coconut milk and 200 ml water ) GRINDED SPICES Shallots, garlic, galangal, lemongrass, cumin, salt, pepper, coriander COOKING DIRECTIONS Boil chicken. Allow 2 cups of broth to remain in the pot. Fry the grinded spices with 2 spoons of vegetable oil. Add the spices into the boiled chicken; turn to low heat until it is tender. Add the coconut milk, stir, continue simmer to enhance flavor. Serve your white chicken curry while hot.
