Problem Solving
Problem Solving problems is a skill that can be learned. The greatest difficulty in solving problems for many people is thinking of enough choices, especially those that are in our best interest. This lesson helps students to practice creative thinking.
Problem Solving n Define Step 1 the problem Know what the problem is… this is the easy part
Problem Solving n Know Step 2 your goal We only have control over our behavior Set goals that we can control This is not the solution this is the outcome we want
Problem Solving n The Step 3 next step is BRAINSTORMING n Simply let ideas flow, both reasonable and wild responses n All ideas are acceptable, this helps us to think outside the box n Others may help us to brainstorm Sometimes it’s good to simply leave a problem alone for a time
Problem Solving Step 4 n Look at all the ideas and pick at least three that are the best solutions When choosing ask, what would a successful person do? - Ask others what they would do - Make sure your solutions are realistic -
Problem Solving n Act Step 5 on the choices I made This can be the most difficult step - You must follow through on this step - Start with the 1 st idea, if that don’t work go on to the next one. And if you have to go on to the 3 rd -
Problem Solving After teaching this lesson have the students work as a group through several example problems following each step. Follow up questions: What is usually the first thing you do when you have a problem? What are some consequences you have experienced from bad decisions in the past? What is an example of a good decision you have made?
