Probability HIGH SCHOOL MATH GRADES 9/10/11
State Standards AII. DSP. 4: Record multiple observations (or simulated examples) of random events and construct empirical models of the probability distributions. Construct a theoretical model and apply the law of large numbers to show the relationship between the two models.
Instructional Objectives Students will be able to design a simulation, carry out the experiment, and estimate the probability of a given problem. Students will be able to construct an empirical model of the results of the simulation and explain what the results indicate.
Considerations Time: 65 -80 minutes Materials: ◦ ◦ Several six-sided dice Several standard decks of cards Pencil/paper Computer with MS Power. Point Have example set of standard cards on hand in case some students aren’t familiar with cards.
Engage TEACHER ACTIONS STUDENT ACTIONS See what students know about probability through discussion of answers. Watch Video ◦ http: //ed. ted. com/videos/? search=probability& video=Ypv. E 0 Co 66 n. U Think about probability ◦ Answer questions on worksheet. Discuss answers with class.
Explore TEACHER ACTIONS STUDENT ACTIONS Split students into groups of 2 or 3. Work together to complete the experiment. Observe and consult with students as needed. Calculate probability of given problem. Create presentation/graph.
Explain TEACHER ACTIONS STUDENT ACTIONS Ask questions for clarification. Students will explain and justify their procedures, probabilities, and conclusions in class presentation. Provide feedback/additional information.
Elaborate TEACHER ACTIONS STUDENT ACTIONS Observe and consult with students as needed. Work together with same group to solve Blackjack probability problem. Ask probing questions. Apply new knowledge and assist peers.
Evaluate TEACHER ACTIONS STUDENT ACTIONS Completes the same rubric for each group. Analyze another group’s model with a rubric. Take student rubrics into consideration. Make notes, comments, and/or ask questions.
