Changes in legislation • • 3 Homelessness is a big issue in the UK, and is now firmly on the political agenda Until now, homeless people were assessed under the Housing Act 1996. The Council had until 3 rd April to work within the above Act in carrying out enquiries to determine if an applicant meets a defined criteria to be provided with accommodation. From 3 April all Councils will operate under a new law that amends the current legislation – Homelessness Reduction Act 2017

Changes in legislation • • • 4 Under the current legislation, councils will take a homelessness application from an applicant who is homeless or threatened with homelessness within 28 days The new Act extends the duty from 28 days to 56 days. This means that the Council must start to try and prevent homelessness if someone is going to be homeless within 56 days. If they become homeless, the Council must try and resolve their homelessness within a further 56 days
