Prisms Unit 12 Section 1 Identify the parts of prisms Find the lateral areas, total areas, and volumes of right prisms
Prisms bases: shaded faces – congruent polygons lying on parallel planes altitude: segment joining lateral edges the two bases and perpendicular to both. The length of the altitude is called the height altitude bases lateral faces: faces of a prism that are not to bases. Lateral faces are parallelograms lateral edges: intersections of lateral faces
Right prism: lateral faces are rectangles and lateral edges are altitudes Right rectangular prism Oblique hexagonal prism Oblique prism: lateral faces are parallelogram but not rectangles and lateral edges are not altitudes
Surface Area measured in square units Lateral area (LA): sum of the areas of the lateral faces. The lateral area of a right prism equals the perimeter of a base times the height of the prism. LA = ph Total area (TA): sum of the areas of all its faces. B equals the area of the base. TA = LA + 2 B
Volume measured in cubic units Volume of a right prisms equals the area of a base times the height of the prism. V = Bh
Example 1 4 cm 2. 8 cm 6 cm 3 cm 4 cm Refer to the diagram above and complete the chart. (p denotes the perimeter of the base. ) p B Rt. Rectangle prism Rt. Triangle prism Practice: Lesson 12. 1 Notes Practice 1 -3 LA V
Example 2 A cube has volume 8 cm². Complete each statement. a. The length of each edge of the cube is _____. b. The total area of the cube is _____. Practice: Lesson Notes 12. 1 Practice 4 Additional Practice (If time): Lesson Notes Additional Example Homework: Practice Worksheet 12. 1
