The IEC 60439 -1 standard n The IEC 60439 -1 standard gives general rules for switchboards construction to meet with safety and availability needs required by the application o guarantees the minimum level of safety of people and equipment o concerns the low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies for the power distribution and control. o states : - the service conditions (temperature. . . ) - the construction requirements (IP, IK, forms, . . . ) - the tests requirements n So conformity to the standard is, for the end user, an insurance on switchboard realization quality. Prisma Plus : a structured switchboard based on functional units n This modular design brings much clearness to the switchboard : o incoming unit o current distribution units o feeder units o distribution units o connection units o communication units Definitions Contents 8

Forms: partitioning n In most installations, Prisma Plus cubicles do not require partitioning, Schneider Electric offering options and features that go well beyond the recommendations of the standard : o front plates requiring a tool to be removed o doors providing access to live parts are keylocked o systematic installation of terminal shields on Compact NS circuit breakers and Interpact INS and INV switch-disconnectors o upstream and downstream terminals on the incoming device are covered The protection of people and equipment is ensured on origin However, Prisma Plus offers different levels of partitioning to create separations inside the cubicles and thus create Form 2, 3 and 4, as defined by the standard. The tests of standard IEC 60439 -1 They guarantee that the switchboard complies with standard and confirm its characteristics: n 7 type tests : n 3 routine tests : o n° 1 - temperature rise limits o n° 8 - overall inspection : cabling, electrical operation o n° 2 - dielectric properties o n° 9 - insulation/dielectric test o n° 3 - short-circuit withstand o n° 10 - protection measures. o n° 4 - protective circuit effectiveness o n° 5 - clearances and creepage distances o n° 6 - mechanical operation o n° 7 - degree of protection Contents 1 4

7 type tests performed by the manufacturer n The aim of these tests is to confirm the switchboard characteristics. n The 7 type tests are carried out on most difficult and unfavourable system Prisma Plus configurations. The assembled and cabled switchboards are made up of their usual components, connection system…, equipped with Merlin Gerin and Telemecanique switchgear and assemblied and installed according to inductrial standards n The tests are conducted either in approved laboratories (Asefa, Kema, Lcie, …), or in Schneider Electric ones Contents 1 5

Test n° 1 (8 -2 -1) : Temperature rise limits n Guarantees the safety and reliability of the switchboard, by avoiding problems such as : o connection damages o reduction in insulation performances o risk of burn for maintenance operators o electronic components damages o faulty operation of the devices : inopportune release Conditions Results Contents 1 6

Test n° 2 (8 -2 -2) : dielectric properties n Guarantees the switchboard safety and reliability , to avoid problems such as : o electrical arc generation o insulation performance decreasing o connection damages Conditions Results Contents 1 9

Test n° 3 (8 -2 -3) : short-circuit withstand n This test simulates an incident which could occur on site n Withstanding the short-circuit currents is : o to avoid danger (rupture and projections of components, arc generation and propagation outside the switchboard, . . . ) o it also means the installation can be quickly put back into operation after the incident Conditions Results Contents 2 2

Test n° 4 (8 -2 -4) : effectiveness of the protective circuit n The effectiveness of the protective circuit is verified by two tests : o resistance measurement of the connection between the exposed conductive parts and the protective circuits o short-circuit withstand performed between the protective conductor and the nearest phase conductor. Conditions Results Contents 2 5

Test n° 5 (8 -2 -5) : clearance and creepage distances n Clearance control : shortest distance between two conductive parts. n Creepage distance control : shortest distance along the surface of an insulating material between two conductive parts. Conditions Results Contents 2 8

Test n° 6 (8 -2 -6) : mechanical operation n Endurance of material, guaranteeing the longevity of the various mechanisms. Conditions Results Contents 3 1

Test n° 7 (8 -2 -7) : degree of protection n The tests carried out define the capacity of an equipped switchboard to : o protect persons against contact with live parts o protect equipment against penetration of solid objects and liquids o protect equipment against external influences such as impacts (shocks). Conditions Results Contents 3 4

The IP degrees of protection : (IEC 60529/EN 60529) n 1 st digit: o protection of persons o protection against solids. n 2 nd digit : o protection against liquids. n Additional letter (optional) : protection of persons against contact with live parts A : protect againts access of the back of the hand o B : protect against access of fingers Ø 12 mm o C : protect against access of a tool diameter 2. 5 mm o D : protect against access of a tool diameter 0. 1 mm o Definitions Contents 3 7

Degree of protection : IK (IEC 62262) n IK code : 2 digits giving the level of shock energy, in Joules : o IK 01 : 0, 14 o IK 02 : 0, 2 o IK 03 : 0, 35 o IK 04 : 0, 5 o IK 05 : 0, 7 o IK 06 : 1 o IK 07 : 2 o IK 08 : 5 o IK 09 : 10 o IK 10 : 20. n The IEC 62262 standard defines a IK code which gives the equipment capacity to resist to mechanical impacts , on all the enclosure surfaces.
