Printmaking
• Printmaking: The activity of making images by printing them from a specially prepared plate or block. • 4 Main types of Printmaking • Relief • Intaglio • Lithography • Screen-printing
Other Printmaking Techniques • Woodcut • Linocut • Engraving • Dry point • Etching • Aquatint • Digital Prints • Monoprints
Mono-printing • Form of printmaking, using lines or images that are only made once • Unlike most printmaking techniques where there are multiple originals • “Single impression of an image from a re-printable block” • Only one impression may be produced; by painting or making a collage on the surface
Mono-printing • “Mono” means one- there are many different ways to create a mono-print • Technique(s): • 1) Painting directly on the surface with lithography or etching inks. The plate goes on the press bed and run through with damp paper. • 2) With acrylic paint; paint an image on the plastic trays, lay the paper over top, roll over with the brayer and pull the paper up!
Monoprint Work Period • Create at least 10 different prints • Experiment with amounts of paint, colour, designs, etc. • Keep (at least) 2 prints the way they are • Add a new layer to 5 • These layers are created by using stencils and/or monoprinting another image(s) over top • Experiment with both techniques
Intaglio
What is Intaglio Printing? • Intaglio: the image is carved or cut into a surface, and the cuts hold the ink- complete opposite of relief printing • Artist Proof: First copy of a print to see the current printing state. Artists can then go back and change their piece before they make editions. • Edition: A set of identical of prints struck from one plateusually at the same time.
Types of Intaglio Prints • Engraving/ etching • Drypoint • Aquatint
Monoprint Work Period • Create at least 10 different prints • Experiment with amounts of paint, colour, designs, etc. • Keep (at least) 2 prints the way they are • Add a new layer to 3 • Add 2 layers to 3 of them • These layers are created by using stencils and/or monoprinting another image(s) over top • Experiment with both techniques
