• Printmaking originated in China after paper was invented around AD 105. Relief printing appeared in Europe in the 15 th Century, when the process of papermaking was imported from the East. Stone rubbing predates any form of woodcut.

The early type of prints were just simple impressions of palm and hands after dipping them in a color. These were discovered on the walls of caves which were excavated throughout the Europe.

Earlier Chinese prints were taken for spreading religious manuscripts. For this purpose reference was

Earlier Chinese prints were taken for spreading religious manuscripts. For this purpose reference was carved in a stone slab. A sheet of paper was then placed on the stone slab and any coal or pigment was rubbed on the paper. The whole surface got dark color except the carved portion. This procedure was carried out to get a large number of prints of the uniform quality and measures in short period of time.

Later on wood took the place of stone because it was easy to carve

Later on wood took the place of stone because it was easy to carve out. However now the technique was reversed. Now the negative space was carved out and the reference was left behind. Now pigment was applied on the positive space and paper was pressed on it to get a print. This technique is called woodcut and still is practiced.
