PRINTMAKING • Is an area of fine art in which an inked image is transferred to a surface.
TYPES OF PRINTMAKING • Relief Printing – The image to be printed is raised from a background. Wood is the medium most often used in relief printing.

WOODBLOCK RELIEF CARVING Wood cut – a type of relief printing in which area of the wood block are carved away, ink is put on the raised surface and it is printed onto paper when pressure is applies.
WOODBLOCK RELIEF CARVING In woodblock printmaking, the parts of the block which are not to appear on the print are removed from the block by cutting them away with a knife or other tool. For printing, the raised parts of the block are inked and the paper is pressed on it by hand or by a press.

PRINTMAKING TOOLS Several knifes can be used for cutting like pointed knifes for line, uand v-gouges and chisels. Today also some machines make can be used to make the cutting easier. Knifes have to kept sharp by repeated sharpening.
PRINTMAKING TOOLS In the Western tradition, oilbased ink is used for printing woodblocks. This is applied evenly in a thin layer with a brayer roller. The paper is place onto the inked block and hand-printed with a rubbing tool or printed with a press. The ink sits as a layer on top of the paper.

Your Project • Objective - Students will create an image using geometric and abstract shapes. This image will be rotated 4 x and then transferred to EZ cut to be carved and printed with plans for reduction print. • • Day 1 – intro and overview, start designing Day 2 – printmaking history/ rubric / rotate design Day 3 – transfer to EZ cut – Mark EZ cut accordingly Day 4 – studio / carving demo Day 5 – carving studio Day 6, 7, 8– printing demo / studio Day 9 - reflection
