The Technique ☞ ‘Letterpress’ is a technique of relief printing made using movable type and a printing press ☞ The process is developed through several stages: Composition Imposition Lock-Up Printing
The Process Composed, movable type is assembled to form the desired text and message – a person charged with composition is named a ‘compositor’ or ‘typesetter’ Tied assemblages of type are converted into a ‘form’ or composed onto the sheet of paper to obtain faster printing and simplify binding. – a person charged with this task is a ‘Stoneman’ Lock-up consists of removing the cords holding the type together, a turns the ‘quoins’ (locking-wedge device) that lock the type, blocks and frame into place. The work is then pressed, depending on the type used and evolving technologies (varies on time-period)

Reykjavík Letterpress is a design studio, est. 2010 by two graphic designers; Hildur Sigurdardottir and Olof Birna Gardarsdottir. As well as offering their service of graphic design, the studio specializes in the letterpress technique which is one of the oldest forms of printing. Today it is used in a modern way. The visible impressions provide a unique, tactile experience which is instantly recognizable.
