Unity • Creation of a stylistic plan that’s all parts subscribe • Example: • New Quincy High has a “Blue Theme” that runs through the school from stair railings, to chair color, to auditorium curtain , tile color, to rug color, etc.

Harmony • A sense of Blending and Unity is obtained when all elements of a design fit together to create an orderly whole • Too much Harmony can be achieved and the motif becomes monotonous • Ex- if Blue was the only color used in Quincy High School

Balance • It is a state of equalized tension and equilibrium • A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)

Types of Balance • Symmetrical: A formal balance is a mirror image of one half of the picture. It is vertically centered, static, and evokes a feeling of class or formality. The objects in each half of the mirror image may not be identical, but may be mirror images in sense of color, number of objects or any other element of design. • Asymmetrical: An informal balance that is attention attracting and dynamic. It balances a number of items of smaller size on one side with a larger one on the other. The modern feel an asymmetrical design is complex to create as it takes skills to distribute the blank space. • Radial: Balance arranged around a central element. The elements placed in a radial balance seem to 'radiate' out from a central point in a circular fashion. • Overall: This mosaic form of balance normally arises from too many elements being put on a page. Due to the lack of hierarchy and contrast, this form of balance can look noisy
