BEGINNINGS OF EXPLORATION When he was 21, he and his father and brothers captured Ceuta in northern Morocco, a Moorish port. Ceuta was a base for Barbary pirates who raided the Portuguese coast and sold their inhabitants in the African slave market.

Ceuta was a base for Barbary pirates who raided the Portuguese coast and sold their inhabitants in the African slave market. Henry was one of the first Europeans to explore the coast of Africa to find the source of the West African gold trade and to stop the pirate attacks on the Portuguese coast.
