Primo Normalization Rules 101 Ray Henry, Chair Normalization Rules Working Group ray. henry@wsu. edu
What we’ll cover today:
• What are normalization rules? • When are they applied? • What do they control? • How do they work in our shared environment?
What are normalization rules?
Normalization rules: • Are in both Alma and Primo • Act on existing data using a variety of operations
Primo Normalization rules: • Are needed for every data source that gets added (PCI, World. Cat, EBSCO, local repository, Alma records)
Primo normalization rules for Alma records
When are normalization rules applied?
Normalization rules are applied: • At the beginning of the process of adding records to Primo (normalization, enrichment, publishing)
What do normalization rules control?
Normalization rules control: • What data go into which sections of the PNX (Primo Normalized XML) record
Normalization rules: • Can be viewed (not edited) by institutional Primo Administrators • Are managed Alliance-wide by Ex Libris, Alliance staff, and the Normalization Rules Working Group in Primo Back Office
Viewing in Primo Back Office:
Normalization rules - PNX sections:
Primo display vs PNX: an example
Primo display:
To see the PNX: Open the Details tab in a new window, and add &show. Pnx=true to the end of the URL in the address bar
PNX (showing sections only):
NR PNX sections again:
PNX (expanded):
Primo display again:
Controlled by NRs: Local subjects – search and display
Controlled by NRs: e. Books currently show as books
How do normalization rules work in our shared environment?
The key difference: For most rule changes, what impacts one institution impacts them all
Changes need to be coordinated with Ex. L processes: • Renormalization (renorm) to have rules applied to all records • Reindex to add/remove from search
Normalization Rules Working Group: Supports this complex process https: //docs. orbiscascade. org/silsdocs/ functional%20 areas/discovery/normali zation_rules_wg/
