PRIMATES Kingdom: Phylum: Sub. Phylum: Class: Order: Animalia Chordata Vertebrata Mammalia Primates

Three Types PROSIMIANS n Most primitive primate n Nocturnal – large eyes n Longer snout n Have tails n Examples? n Lemurs, Tarsiers

MONKEYS n Have tails (some prehensile) n Diurnal n Mostly omnivores n Examples? n Spider Monkey, Tamarins, Mandrills, Baboons

APES n No tails n Diurnal n Examples? n Gibbons, Orangutans, Gorilla, Chimpanzees, Bonobos, Humans

Bonobos (Pan paniscus) n n n Most related ape to humans Critically Endangered – from Ituri Forest in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) Habitat Loss, Bushmeat, War How Different from a Chimpanzee (Pan troglodyte)? Used to be called pygmy chimps Longer legs, narrower shoulders, smaller ears, darker face, pink to red lips, fine hair on top of head with part down center

Classification Issues… n n DNA evidence suggests that chimps/bonobos separated from each other approximately 1 million years ago (from humans 5 -7 MYA) Chimps and Bonobos diverged in nature most likely due to the Congo River Talk of reclassifying chimps and bonobos into the genus, Homo because of the genetic similarities to Humans (Homo sapiens) (at least 98 -99% the same) OR, reclassifying Humans as Pan sapiens
