Phytoplankton
Phytoplankton • Phytoplankton (식물플랑크톤) – 해양에서 가장 중요한 일차생산자 – Phytoplankton은 빛이 있는 모든 지역에 분포: including under ice in polar areas – 해양 일차생산의 약 95% 를 차지 – tiny, single-cell algae drifting about with water motion ( 작은 단세포로 물에 떠다님) – Provide a major, direct food source for animals in water column and in the sediments (수층과 저서동물 의 주요한 직접적인 먹이 원)
Phytoplankton • Phytoplankton (식물플랑크톤) – 모든 수심에서 발견되지는 않음 – Compensation depth (보상수심; Gross primary production = respiration) • About 1 % SI (surface irradiance): 약 200 m in ocean – Dominant groups: diatoms and dinoflagellates • Bacterioplankton 제외 – Phytoplankton bloom (대증식): Red, green or brown tides (적조; 녹조; 갈조)
Phytoplankton systematics (분류) • Kingdom Monera – Cyanophyta (blue-green algae): • 2000 species (10 % in marine environment) • Bacterio-plankton • 넓은 의미의 phytoplankton • Kingdom Protista – Euglenophyta (Euglenoids) • 900 (3 %) – Chrysophyta (황갈조식물문): diatoms • 15000 (50 %) – Pyrrophyta (황적조식물문): dinoflagellates • 2000 (90 %) – Cryptophyta (은편모조류) • 200 (50 %)
Phytoplankton size • Standard screen (20 m mesh) – Retained: netplankton (or micro-plankton; 20 – 200 m) – Passed: nanoplakton (2 – 20 m) • Diameter < 2 m: ultra-plankton (picoplankton) – Bacterio-plankton • 수가 많은 것: nanoplankton > netplankton • 전체 생체량이 많은 것: netplankton • 연안에는 큰 size의 phytoplankton이, 대양으로 갈 수록 작은 size의 phytoplankton이 우세해진다
규조류 (돌말류, Diatoms) • • 온대 , 고위도 지역에서 가장 우점하는 phytoplankton 백악기 (약 1억년 전)부터 바다에 많이 분포 Unicellular Cell size: from about 2 µm to 1000 µm – 크기가 상대적으로 크므로 많은 양의 nutrients를 요구 • 일부 종은 긴 chains 을 형성 • 모든 종은 external skeleton (frustule; 규조각)을 가짐 – 한 쌍으로 구성 (silica 성분) – Silica가 cell dry weight의 40 -50%를 차지 – 생장을 위해 Dissolved silicon (Si (OH)4) 을 흡수 • Two types of diatoms: the pennate (우상류) and centric forms (중심류) – Pennate diatoms are mostly benthic – Centric diatoms: more common in the plankton
Centric diatom (중심류) (planktonic) Pennate diatom (우상류) (benthic)
규조류 (Diatoms)
규조류 (Diatoms) • Reproduction (생식) – – – Usual method: a simple asexual division 두 개의 frustules가 나누어짐 A new inner valve of the frustule을 생성 두 개의 daughter cells 중 하나는 size가 작아짐 Cell 이 a certain critical minimal size에 도달하면 sexual reproduction (유성생식)을 하게 됨 • Skeleton이 없고 절반의 genetic material 을 가진 cell을 생성 (배 우자; gametes): meiosis (생식세포분열)을 통해 4개의 gametes 생 성 • 두 개의 gametes이 합해져 하나의 zygote를 형성 (auxospore; 증 대포자) • Normal shape and size의 frustule을 생성 • Size 가 줄어들었을 때에 만 sexual reproduction을 하는 것은 아 님 – 환경이 좋지 않을 경우 resting spores를 생성 (with a hard shell) • 바닥으로 가라앉아 환경이 좋아질 때까지 휴면
Diatom asexual reproduction
Meiosis
Benthic diatoms
Dinoflagellates (와편모조류) • The second most abundant phytoplankton group (diatoms이 가장 abundant) • 두 개의 flagella (편모)를 가짐 • 대부분 단일 개체로 존재: A few species form chains • 일반적으로 diatoms보다 개체 size가 작음 – Inorganic nutrients가 풍부한 곳에는 diatoms, 부족한 곳에 는 dinoflagellates가 주로 분포 – 열대 및 아열대의 영양염이 부족한 환경에 가장 풍부한 식 물플랑크톤 (the most numerous of the phytoplankton in nutrient-poor tropical and subtropical waters) • 온대 해역에는 diatoms이 우점
Dinoflagellates (와편모조류) • 일부만 strictly autotrophic – About 50% of the dinos are strict heterotrophs (종속영양생물) • No chlorophyll • feeding on phytoplankton and small zooplankton – 일부는 mixotrophic (혼합영양; autotrophic + heterotrophic) – 일부는 parasitic and symbiotic
와편모조류 Dinos possess two flagella: motile
Dinoflagellates (와편모조류) • Red tides (적조)를 주로 일으키는 phytoplankton – Dinoflagellates 는 급속히 reproduction 할 수 있는 능력 이 있음 – 따라서 단시간 내에 개체 수를 급격하게 증가시킬 수 있 음 – 세포수가 200, 000 - 500, 000 cells l-1 에 도달하면 물색 변 화를 감지할 수 있음 – 108 cells l-1 이상으로 늘어나면 red tide – Essential nutrients 가 고갈되면, the bloom will decay • The bacterial decomposition of large amounts of organic materials: 산소를 고갈시킴
Oyster, mussels
