Charts are a way of presenting information.

Bar chart Pie chart

The titles tell what the charts are about

Pie charts don’t have numbers. We can look at how big each part is. The biggest part is the most popular answer. The ‘key’ at the side tells us what each part shows.

Pie chart We can quickly see most pupils watch films at home and in cinemas. And most pupils go the cinema 6 to 10 times a year.

Bar charts often have numbers so we can find more detailed information. They also have words along the bottom.

Bar charts are also good for comparing two things. Here the number of boys and girls is shown by different coloured bars.

Bar chart We can see 80 pupils said they go to the cinema to see the latest films. Only 5 pupils go because they like the food.

Bar chart And 35 boys and 25 girls said they like cartoons best.

Here you can see a pie chart and a written report about the same information. Where pupils watch films In this survey we spoke to P 6 pupils at Sunny School. They all loved watching films but we asked them where they usually watch films. Most pupils told us they watch films both a home and in cinemas. Some pupils said they only watch films at home – they never go to the cinema. The smallest number of pupils said they never watch films at home and they only watch films in the cinema. The survey shows that it is common for pupils to watch films at home and at the cinema.

We can find information in the pie chart quickly. It is easy to understand.
