Primary characteristics of puberty • Primary sex characteristics refer to changes to the sexual organs themselves (uterus, vagina, penis, and testes) • It involves both males and females.
Primary sex characteristics for males (boys) • Primary sex characteristic changes for boys include the enlargement of the testes, penis, prostate gland, and seminal vesicles. • These changes normally begin to occur between the ages of 9 and 14 years. • Their growth is generally completed between ages 12 and 16 years.
Primary sex characteristics for females (girls) • Some changes that occur to females include: - The budding stage of development (breast elevation) and the rounding of the hip begins - The uterus, vagina, labia and clitoris increase in size - Pubic hair growth becomes rapid and is slightly pigmented - Menarche occurs (first occurrence of menstruation)
Secondary characteristics • Secondary sexual characteristics are those that emerge during the prepubescent through post pubescent phases • They are visible changes such as: - Growth of hair - Change in body shapes for both males and females

Why do these changes occur? • So that the human body is capable of reproduction • If puberty did not occur we would not be able to have babies, which in turn means no human race!
