Lachlan’s Story. Lachlan attended the Parish Sacramental Programme to prepare for his first Holy Communion. Each week the catechist would explain about different parts of the Mass. In the first week, it was about gathering and listening to the Word of God. Lachlan boasted to Grandpa about how clever he was, as he understood everything clearly. Grandpa smiled and continued knitting with the colourful wool that Lachlan had given him for his birthday. In the second week they learnt about the Last Supper and how Jesus had taken the bread and wine. He even knew the words that Jesus used, because Father used them at every Mass. Again he boasted to Grandpa, who just smiled and asked Lachlan to pass another ball of wool from his bag. His needles continued clattering.

The next week however, was very different. The catechist talked about ‘priestly power’, how at Mass, the Holy Spirit works through the priest at Mass and changes the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus. Lachlan didn’t feel so clever. How could the bread look, smell and taste like bread but be the Body of Jesus? How could the wine look, taste and smell like wine but be the Blood of Jesus? When he returned home, he explained to Grandpa that he was muddled with the idea that a piece of bread and some wine could look like one thing but be something else. He understood that the priest was there, acting in God’s place. He knew when God blesses nature, nature can change. But this was different. Grandpa asked Lachlan to reach down into his wool bag for another ball of wool. He was still knitting with the wool Lachlan had given him.

The next morning Grandpa came into Lachlan’s bedroom. He had his old wool bag over his shoulder. He reached in and pulled out a beautiful jumper. Lachlan realised it was the wool he had given Grandpa for his birthday. He had knitted it into a jumper. The wool looked the same. It was the same colour. It even smelt the same but it was now different. Lachlan thought for a moment. This is what happens at Mass. The priest, on our behalf gives the bread and wine to God and God gives it back as Jesus’ Body and Blood. Lachlan felt very, very clever now because he understood.

What Lachlan Understood When Lachlan saw the jumper that Grandpa had made from the balls of wool that Lachlan gave him for his birthday, it helped him understand how the bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Jesus. The wool still looked the same but had changed into a jumper. The bread and wine that the priest blesses still looks like bread and wine but has changed into something else – the Body and Blood of Jesus. It still looks the same but has been changed by the power, which the Holy Spirit gives the priest.
