NITTY GRITTY 1. Purpose of tonight: setting just right learning goals for your students 2. Birthday Celebrations @ School- no more food treats due to allergies. You may send in little toys for your student to pass out. Must fit in their backpack in the morning. 3. Absence/ Tardy Policy: 5 unexcused and 15 tardies. Only 10 handwritten notes permitted per year. The rest need to be from the doctor. 4. Lunch- free/ reduced application- find on class website 5. Lost and Found- your student is in charge of their things at school. If they lose something, it’s their responsibility to find it. Lost and found is located next to the cafeteria. 6. Volunteering: starting 2 nd 9 weeks (mid October). Currently still teaching kids routines and procedures so we aren’t ready for volunteers yet.

GUIDED READING **Students read a book from their book box to their parents -notice what’s similar/ different between level A and Level D book expectations -text complexity- pattern vs. no pattern -1 sentence per page vs. multiple sentences per page -repetitive text vs. varied text structure -high picture support vs. minimal picture support Where we are @ now: most students are at a Level A reading level, and that is ok! Where we want to be @ end of year: Level D or higher with decoding and comprehension

SUPPORTING READING GROWTH @ HOME 1. Read every night to and with your student (picture books not guided reading books) -make it fun- let student pick out stories they like at home and from library -build their comprehension- ask questions about the story and beyond the story (predictions, inferences, compare/ contrast stories, etc. ) -use comprehension question list to guide your questioning 2. Sight Words- practice sight word list at least 4 nights a week -make it fun- ways to practice list -make it useful- not just memorization but utilization and understanding- use them in a sentence when you’re talking, practice writing them correctly in your stories 3. Homework Goal (Reading)- practice student’s personalized reading goal 10 min. / 4 nights each week. - these stepping stone skills are needed to promote their reading growth
![WRITING 1. Think, say, write strategy- if you’re student can’t orally tell their story, WRITING 1. Think, say, write strategy- if you’re student can’t orally tell their story,](http://slidetodoc.com/presentation_image_h2/a4b434055fa7c9754a523955d6ce5c79/image-6.jpg)
WRITING 1. Think, say, write strategy- if you’re student can’t orally tell their story, they won’t be able to write their story (or it won’t make any sense) 2. Kindergarten writing- not conventional spelling yet, and that’s ok! We will get there eventually, but we need stepping stones (lessons and practice) to get there. *Student’s share 1 story that they’re proud of *see class website for more information about writing
![SUPPORTING THEIR WRITING @ HOME 1. Talk about their writing with them- ask them SUPPORTING THEIR WRITING @ HOME 1. Talk about their writing with them- ask them](http://slidetodoc.com/presentation_image_h2/a4b434055fa7c9754a523955d6ce5c79/image-7.jpg)
SUPPORTING THEIR WRITING @ HOME 1. Talk about their writing with them- ask them questions about their story, show them that you find their work valuable and that you notice their writing progress 2. Hang up their best piece on the fridge 3. Personal goals- if your student has goals related to writing, such as pencil grip, coloring, using shapes to draw pictures, letter formation, then this is how you can specifically help them improve their writing 4. Don’t pressure them to spell everything correctly. This hinders their writing growth- they will refuse to try to spell or draw something they’ve never done before if we always give them the answer.

MATH https: //safeshare. tv/submit? url=https%3 A%2 F%2 Fwww. youtube. com %2 Fwatch%3 Fv%3 Dkiba. FBga. Px 4 1. Number Talks- demonstrate what and why behind it. Students participate in number talks. 2. Critical thinking 3. Flexible thinking over just memorizing facts and algorithms 4. Accountable math talk- explaining your thinking, agreeing and disagreeing with each other in a productive way

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR STUDENT IN MATH @ HOME 1. Not drill and kill practice. If student knows how to solve an addition or subtraction equation, do they know how to explain why it works/ how they got their answer? The end goal with knowing how to “do” math is to apply it to situations/ problems they haven’t encountered yet. Building their critical thinking is the key. 2. Math goals- practice student’s specific math goal 4 nights a week for 10 min. at a time. 3. i. Ready math program- just right fit for your kid based on what they currently know. It grows with them. STUDENT GOALS -Each student enters kindergarten at different levels of understanding -Setting goals will help ensure every student reaches grade level expectations as well as reaches their highest potential -Reading, Math, and Personal Goals- each student will have 1 of each to work towards at home and at school as well as 1 sight word list with 10 sight words. -Goals were determined based on kindergarten assessments and classroom observations -Goal progress will be checked at the beginning of every month by the teachers. If student has met goals, new goals will be given. **Parents don’t need to inform teachers if goals have been met. We will know. **
![HOW YOU CAN HELP WITH STUDENT GOALS @ HOME 4 Nights/ 4 Goals/ 30 HOW YOU CAN HELP WITH STUDENT GOALS @ HOME 4 Nights/ 4 Goals/ 30](http://slidetodoc.com/presentation_image_h2/a4b434055fa7c9754a523955d6ce5c79/image-11.jpg)
HOW YOU CAN HELP WITH STUDENT GOALS @ HOME 4 Nights/ 4 Goals/ 30 -40 Minutes -look in PRIDE night folders for your student’s reading, math, and personal goals this month (1 reading, 1 math, 1 personal, and 1 sight word list) -use homework goal sheets for ways to practice goals- pick the choices that your student likes. You don’t have to do all of them- these are just options. -choose 4 nights a week to work on goals. 10 minutes @ most on each goal. More than 40 minutes, your kids have checked out and aren’t benefitting. -Figure out a schedule for practicing skills that works best for your student and family. Maybe alternate 2 goals one night and other 2 goals next night. **Sight word progress lists will be checked every Friday. If we notice students have successfully mastered their list, a new list will be given. 1 -3 weeks should be sufficient time to master a given list.
