CHAPTER 24 Caroline writes back; Bingley will certainly be gone for awhile and everyone is delighted with Darcy’s sister, Georgiana. Janes tries to put on a brave face, telling Elizabeth that Bingley has not wronged her and refusing to believe that Caroline has ulterior motives. Elizabeth is disgusted that Bingley could be so weak as to let his sisters and friend determine his affections. She cites him and Charlotte as examples of human inconsistency. But Jane tells Elizabeth she judges them too harshly. Wickham occasionally visits and his pleasant company helps to dispel the gloom. Mr. Bennet encourages Elizabeth in her pursuit of Wickham. WWW. CHAPTER 25 Mr. Collins leaves again and Mrs. Bennet’s brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, arrive for a visit. Mr. Gardiner is a tradesman in London. Mrs. Gardiner is intelligent and wellliked by Jane and Elizabeth confirms that Jane was very much in love and swears that Bingley’s departure was no accident. Mrs. Gardiner proposes that Jane come stay with them in London to help her recovery. While Mrs. Gardiner promises that Jane and Bingley are not likely to meet, Elizabeth secretly hopes that Jane’s presence nearby will rekindle Bingley’s affection. WWW. LITCHARTS. COM

CHAPTER 26 After noticing how much Elizabeth likes Wickham, Mrs. Gardiner cautions Lizzy on making an unwise match, reminding her that Wickham has no fortune. Elizabeth promises not to jump into a relationship. Mr. Collins and Charlotte are married. Before they leave, Elizabeth promises to come and visit Charlotte. Jane travels to London with the Gardiners. She writes to Lizzy saying she has written to Caroline Bingley, but she wouldn’t write back. When Jane visited her, she was very cold to her. It has been four weeks since Jane has seen Bingley. Around the same time, Wickham turns his attention to another girl who recently inherited 10, 000 pounds. CHAPTER 27 Elizabeth makes a trip with Sir William Lucas and Mariah to see Charlotte. Along the way, they stop in London to see Jane. Mrs. Gardiner confirms that Jane feels rejected by the Bingley’s. Mrs. Gardiner also speaks harshly of Wickham for changing his attentions to Miss King because of her inheritance. Elizabeth defends Wickham, however. Mrs. Gardiner invites Elizabeth to go with Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner on a tour of Derbyshire and the Lake Country during the summer. Elizabeth accepts. WWW. LITCHARTS. COM

CHAPTER 28 Elizabeth, Sir Lucas, and his daughter arrive at the parsonage home of Mr. Collins and Charlotte. Mr. Collins soon gives them a tour, taking pains to show off every architectural feature, garden view, and piece of furniture in the house. If Charlotte is embarrassed by her husband, she hides it well. She takes Elizabeth on a tour of her neatly arranged home and Elizabeth realizes that Charlotte has made herself a comfortable life here. The next day, the arrival of a carriage at Rosings containing the young and sickly Miss De Bourgh causes a great commotion. Everyone is invited to dinner at Rosings. CHAPTER 29 Elizabeth and the rest of the party go to Rosings Park to dine. Lady Catherine De Bourgh is snobby and demanding. Anne De Bourgh is dull and uncommunicative. Mr. Collins and Sir William Lucas suck up to Lady Catherine. After lecturing Charlotte about how to run her household, Lady Catherine begins to question Elizabeth about her family. It is easy to tell she disapproves of how the Bennets have raised their daughters and Elizabeth’s own opinions: Educationg their daughters Failing to provide musical training The younger daughters being introduced to society before the elder daughters are married WWW. CHAPTER 30 Sir Lucas is satisfied with his daughter’s situation and so departs for

CHAPTER 30 Sir Lucas is satisfied with his daughter’s situation and so departs for home. Lady Catherine has arranged for her nephews, Fitzwilliam Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam to visit. When they arrive, Mr. Collins brings them to the parsonage. Darcy meets Elizabeth with his usual reserve, but Colonel Fitzwilliam is pleased to finally meet Elizabeth and enjoys getting to know her. CHAPTER 31 Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam get along very well. One time at Rosings Park, he asks Elizabeth to play the piano. When Darcy comes into the room to watch her play, Elizabeth playfully accuses him of spreading rumors about her lack of musical talent. Colonel Fitzwilliam asks Elizabeth about Darcy’s reputation. Elizabeth recounts the ball at Meryton and comments that Darcy would not dance, even though some girls needed partners. Darcy tries to excuse his behavior by saying he is not good at conversation with strangers. Elizabeth says he needs practice at conversation with strangers as she needs practice at the piano. Despite Lady Catherine’s attempts to talk about her daughter, Elizabeth notices that Darcy in uninterested in her. WWW. LITCHARTS. COM

CHAPTER 32 The next morning, Elizabeth is surprised by a visit from Darcy. Conversation is awkward, and they struggle to avoid awkward silences. Elizabeth asks Darcy about suddenly departing Netherfield. Darcy suggests that Bingley is not likely to return there because of his connections in London. After Darcy leaves, Charlotte tells Elizabeth that the only explanation for Darcy’s odd behavior in calling on her is that he must be in love with her. Elizabeth finds this idea hard to believe. WWW.
