Jewish Culture
A Brief History • Joseph, son of Jacob and Rachel, grandson of Isaac and Rebecca, great-grandson of Abraham and Sarah. • Sold into slavery in Egypt by jealous bothers, but was successful there • Descendants became enslaved • Moses led them from Egypt to Mt. Sinai and God gave them the Torah (1 st 5 books of Old Testament) • wandered desert for 40 years until they were able to find the ‘Promised Land’ that God had given to Abraham known then as Canaan and today as Israel
Jewish Diaspora • the dispersion of Jewish population throughout Europe and Middle East by the Romans
Jewish Movements • Orthodox - believes Jewish law comes from God and cannot be changed • Conservative - believes Jewish law comes from God but that the law can change • Reconstruction - outgrowth of Conservative, does not believe in a personified deity and believes that Jewish law was created by men • Reform - believes Jewish law was inspired by God and one can choose which laws to follow • ↑ Traditional • ↓ Progressive
