What is the “Summer Slide? ” Summer learning loss (also known as the summer slide) occurs when the skills students learn during the school year are lost or forgotten over the summer.

How do we prevent it? Read Something Every Day Recipes Schedules Magazines, Comics, Newspaper, etc. Online resources (Newsela. com, Wonderopolis. com) Letters/Cards/Emails from friends and family Reading Games (Word Munchers, Bingo, abcya. com, tablet)

How do we prevent it? Keep Reading Aloud Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can’t, so she will build listening comprehension skills with grade-level and above books. How do we prevent it? RAZ-kids. com Reads text aloud to your child as a model to build fluency and comprehension Children can record themselves reading a book to practice their fluency Children can take a quiz on the book they read to increase comprehension skills Reports for parents Communication between teacher and students

How do we prevent it? Visit Your Local Library Make it a part of your weekly routine (A great way to avoid those late fees too ; o) Take advantage of great FREE programs. What is a “Just Right” Book? A book that your child can read 95% of the words with no help at all. Use the “ 5 Finger Rule” - Have your child read the first page of the book. If he/she makes 5 or more mistakes, then I would consider that book to be more beneficial to read together.
