Prevent Strategy • The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (link is external) (Parliament. UK), which became law in February 2015, puts a responsibility on schools to participate in work to prevent young people from being drawn into terrorism, and to challenge extremist ideas that support, or are shared by, terrorist groups. • Schools and settings (see specified authorities above) are subject to the duty to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. Being drawn into terrorism includes not just violent extremism but also non-violent extremism, which can create an atmosphere conducive to terrorism and can popularise views which terrorists exploit.
Radicalisation • When a person is encouraged to become an advocate of a. radical political reform by supporting terrorism and violent extremism. • Radicalisation of children and young people may include encouraging them to undertake violent activities on the grounds of religious belief. • Children may be exposed to messages about terrorism through a family member or friend, a Religious school or group, or through social media and the internet. This creates risk of a child or young person being drawn into criminal activity and exposure to significant harm
Training and Development • What's happened – Df. E established a Prevent agenda inc. guidance to schools to deliver WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent) training • What's available – WRAP training, Df. E guidance materials, Ealing Prevent team • What should happen – all Ealing schools to have basic WRAP training, curriculum materials being developed
What is in place in Castlebar • Whole School Prevent training – 2 December 2015 (2 hours) • Prevent Duty Audit completed • Establishing of School Safeguarding group • Computing Lead attend e-safety training • Whole School Safeguarding training ( inc. update on Prevent) • SBM training on Safer recruitment
What needs to happen • Build opportunities in curriculum to discuss controversial and sensitive issues – Newsround for more able? • Check staff/Govs CPD records • Review anti-bullying policy • Talk to school council about perceptions of bullying • Consider workshop for parents/carers

When there are concerns • Follow the school safeguarding protocols by reporting to Head or Designated Lead • Safeguarding leads can contact Ealing Prevent team directly and/or Children's Services (ECIRS)
