Introduction v. Thrombocytopenia is a common problem during pregnancy that is not frequently detected and as a result is often improperly managed. v. Thrombocytopenia is the second most common hematologic abnormality encountered during pregnancy next to anemia. v. The observable worry with thrombocytopenia during pregnancy is the risk of significant bleeding at the time of delivery. v. Obstetricians in our locality have no comprehensible guide for managing pregnant women with thrombocytopenia due to a lack of data about the frequency, severity and causes of this condition.
Objective The present study was designed to determine the prevalence of thrombocytopenia among pregnant women attending antenatal care service at Gondar University Hospital, North West Ethiopia.
Methods v. Institution based cross-sectional study design was used to assess prevalence of thrombocytopenia among pregnant women attending ante-natal care service at Gondar university hospital from January to April 2015. v Using convince sampling technique a total of 217 pregnant women were included in the study. v. A Structured pretested questionnaire was used to obtain sociodemographic information, nutritional factors, gynecological factors, history and clinical condition. v. Blood samples were collected for hematological tests. obstetrics and
Methods v. Platelet count and other platelet parameters were determined by using Sysmex. KX 21 automation which applies electric impedance principle (Sysmex user manual, 2002). v. The data were entered to Epi info version 6 software and analyzed using SPSS version 20 statistical software. v Finally the frequency, proportion and summery statistic had been used to describe the study population in relation to study variables. v. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis was used to evaluate the effect of independent variable over the dependent variable. v. P-value < 0. 05 was considered as statically significant.
Result v. A total of 217 women attending antenatal care service follow-up at Gondar University hospital were involved in this study. v. Thrombocytopenia among 19 pregnant women in this study was showed a prevalence of 8. 8%. v. The mean + SD platelet count was 238. 85*109/L (+74. 57). v. Being rural in residence showed a significant association with thrombocytopenia with (COR=4. 3: 95%CI 1. 48 -12. 76).

Conclusion and recommendation v. In general thrombocytopenia is a crucial problem among pregnant women as the present study showed that the prevalence of thrombocytopenia was 8. 8% with the dominancy of mild type thrombocytopenia. v. Thrombocytopenia was higher among pregnant women who come from rural residence of the study area. v. For this reason screening of pregnant women should include platelet count especially when they come from rural areas.
