IMPERFECTO: D E A T H C O W S • descriptions (giving background information or characteristics) • emotions (used for all expressions using feelings or emotions usually estar) • age (with tener) • time (with ser) • habitual actions (any word or phrase that indicated something happened frequently) • conditions (things that could change from one minute to the next; often with estar and some tener expressions) • ongoing actions (estar + -ando/-iendo) • weather expressions (usually hacer or estar) • simultaneous actions (using mientras)

MORE USES OF IMPERFECTO • Use the imperfect to set the scene/give background information. Era viernes por la noche. Llovía mucho y mi familia y yo comíamos en un restaurante mexicano. • If two or more things were going on at the same time (simultaneous actions), both verbs use the imperfect and we use the adverb mientras to connect them. El pianista tocaba mientras los clientes conversaban y comían tranquilamente.
