8. 3 When to Use the Imperfect In general, the imperfect is used to describe actions or states in the past that do not have a clear beginning or ending. Habitual/ongoing actions without a limiting time frame Cuando yo era pequeña comía galletas todos los sábados. Descriptions/characteristics in the past El profesor era muy inteligente, pero también muy estricto. Dates/times/seasons/weather conditions Era primavera y llovía casi todos los días. Ongoing actions that were happening together Fredi escuchaba música mientras Pepe estudiaba. Background information Hacía mucho frío y no hacía sol. 8. 3 Imperfect: Regular Verbs As usual, start with the stem. Then add the appropriate ending. -ar endings Yo -aba nosotros -ábamos tú -abas vosotros -abais Ud. /él/ella -aba Uds. /ellos/ellas aban -er/-ir endings yo -ía nosotros -íamos tú -ías vosotros -íais Ud. /él/ella -ía Uds. /ellos/ellas -ían Note written accent marks on all -er/-ir forms.
